Does it REALLY have to smell sooo bad??

I'm now almost 2 months into post op with a loop ileostomy.

im managing fairly well with day to day practicalities of living with a stoma - only ONCE forgetting to fold and seal the end of the bag! And dealing with several leaks due to the powder for soreness not allowing the bag to make a proper seal.

no, my query is to fellow stoma people-do the contents of an ileostomy bag ALWAYS smell SOOO BAD?

i eat a fairly bland diet and don't necessarily eat things that would create bad odour BUT no matter what whenever I empty the bag it literally smells like a sewer or cess pit! Not nice for anyone else in the house as it literally permeates the entire house which doesn't help by being a modern open plan style.

does it get better over time or am I forever to be cursed with this?

Im so paranoid that I shower every day and wear tons of perfume although my hubby says you can't smell it outside the bag. Would be helpful to hear what other peoples' experiences are ...

Respond have a range of drops in bottles on various scents including mint which be the answer you are looking for.

There is also a product called Na'scent which is said to hide smells sample available from Bullens Healthcare but all suppliers supply it.

Smell is a CROSS we all have to bear

To be honest I don't think anyone will notice any smell from an Ileostomy. I had a loop Ileostomy for over 12 months and by and large when I emptied the bag the main smell was the same as whatever I ate, I've also had leaks in public and know for a fact that no one could smell it. Since then I've had my Ileostomy closed and now have a permanent Colostomy which trust me that is a different story, although leaks are very rare if at all, when I change myself the smell is horrendous no matter what I've eaten, far, far worse than 'Normal Poo' but I just put up with it as it only happens in the Bathroom or Toilet but it is bad, as I've said far worse than any smell from a Ileostomy. There are many products that claim to either mask or get rid of the smell and I for don't think any of them work

I had a loop ileostomy op nearly five months ago, the smell when I empty or change the bag is horrendous.  It's unpleasant for anyone else in the house and means I would not stay out long enough to empty it out of my own home.  However I have now discovered Na scent and it's amazing, most of the time there is hardly any smell now. My local authority apparently won't pay for any more deodorising products but I will pay for it myself it's so good.

The problem I am currently having is heartburn something I have never suffered from before. Does anyone know if an ileostomy makes one more susceptible?

Thank you for talking about this. I have my ileostomy for 11 weeks and it very hard to adjust. I had major sugery cytoreductive as I was stage four terminal 4-6 months to live. I moved in with my sister and her husband and yes the smell of my stool from the bag is offensive. I did think about matches and will get some for sure .  My stool from the bag is also very pasty and sticks to the toliet is is very gross. Does anyone have this problem ?I feel I smell as well. If everything heals well and the cancer does not return I can have a reversal but I am scared of that surgery as well. Has anyone had a reversal yet? Thank you and God bless you

  • Hi have you tried lining the toilet with toilet paper before you empty it? It does help to keep the toilet clean. Good luck.
