I’ve recently learnt that despite having a cancerous polyp removed from my bowel in 2024 and having a temporary ileostomy that I now have a 2nd cancerous polyp that has been removed but is in the same area as the previous one so Dr believes it would be best to remove that area involving removal of my rectum/anus and obviously having a permanent colostomy . Just wondering if any one has been through a APR and has advice on how painful it is/recovery and any tips please.
Hi Charlotte Char Cad
It’s nice to see your name pop up again, but not so nice to see the reason for your post. I’m sorry to read you’re facing having APR surgery after finding another cancerous polyp. It’s a daunting thought for us all undergoing such a major operation.
I’ve had my rectum removed but not my anus in my different type of surgery, so don’t have the right recovery experience to share, unfortunately, but I obviously do have a permanent colostomy which I find very straightforward to manage.
While you’re waiting for replies here in the stoma group, you might want to copy your post into the bowel group to widen your audience, as this type of surgery does come up regularly there.
Do you know when you’re going in for your surgery?
Sarah xx
Hi Char Cad. I’m sorry you’ve been given this diagnosis and pathway. Please read my profile and previous posts on colon and rectal cancer forum. Whilst this is a major surgery let me just say it is doable. It is hard but you will come through. You will need patience. I’ve found the best healer is time. Very best wishes to you
Thanks for your response and kind words Sarah.
Although not what I was hoping for obviously but I’ve lived with Sid my stoma for nearly 2 years now and would like to think I manage it quite well so don’t think it’ll be that different
It’s more the APR that is unknown to me but as always I’ll take it as it comes and remain positive that it’s the best outcome to hopefully prevent further polyps in the future.
Thank you will post on bowel group also.
Hope you are doing well
Surgery should be in about 5 weeks time as lots of scans etc to have 1st.
take care and many thanks

Thank you Elijah’s Nan. Sorry to hear the incredibly rough journey you’ve had but so pleased to hear the outcome is so good
Ive kinda been here before after having a cancerous polyp, some of my lower bowel removed and a temporary ileostomy fitted but obviously now things have changed and another polyp in the same area has been found to be cancerous. Completely get that the best option is to remove the danger zone and as I say have been living with a ileostomy for nearly 2 years so a permanent colostomy doesn’t phase me. I’m just dreading the after op recovery especially staying in hospital over the summer when I have kids to be enjoying it with. Just another annoying state to go through but as you say hopefully for a better outcome.
Take care and many thanks x
