Bleeding

I'm bleeding from the opening of stoma, after my usual constipation followed by diarrhoea! I'm using the stoma powder but don't know if it'll do more harm than good! Any ideas please? Honestly, you'd think I'd be an expert after 4years + but I'm still learning!

  • Oh Moira

I’m so sorry you’re still having problems with this. It’s been going on too long.
The stoma nurses should be supporting you with this. Different products may ease the aggravated skin.
Maybe your GP needs to get onboard with this too

Are you still under your consultant?

sending you a huge hug xxx

  • Hi Ann,

It just goes on and on, and every time it happens I pass mucas too! I'm fed up to tell you the truth but nobody seems that bothered! The doctors say ask the stoma nurses, the stoma nurses tell me to ask the consultant and the consultant just beams with pride at his ' beautiful stoma' ! It's driving me nuts! I've tried everything to get the stoma working properly, but nothing works! It would be funny if it wasn't so darned painful!

Anyway Ann, enough of my moaning, it's done me a power of good, just hearing from you!  How are you? Hopefully life is good?  I miss our giggles on here!

    Sending hugs right back,

  • Oh Moira

This is the place to vent.
You’ve had a rotten time and it’s not fair

Shake them up. Stamp your feet and have a tantrum.
    It’s not on

Im not good but that’s a different story.
I’ve had the reversal  and I am having good days a few manageable days more and bad days less. So I suppose I’m lucky.
my husband’s Parkinson’s is now moving quickly and it’s horrible

    Thats enough moaning

    You take care my friend

    love

  • Hi Moira,

sorry to hear about your recent bleeding problem. Do you mean the skin around your stoma ? If so I’ve also had this problem lately with the skin around my stoma getting irritated possibly by faeces but maybe heat too and bleeding quite a bit . I’d stopped using my aloe rings as they were too tight around my stoma and the skin had gotten better but when I spoke to my stoma nurse about it she said about cutting my aloe rings in 1/2 and moulding them into shape around the stoma- thankfully this had worked for me and the skin is much better and stopped bleeding.  I was told it’s pretty normal (as long as it’s not gallons of blood obviously) for the outside of my stoma to bleed as it’s very delicate/fibrous.
If I’ve got the wrong end of the stick and you mean actually bleeding from your inside of your stoma itself then I’m not sure on that one sorry but I wouldn’t have thought that should be left untreated and not sure the powder should be used on the stoma itself just around the outside skin ?!
I’m saddened to hear your not getting much help from your gp/stoma nurse or consultant as that’s what they are there to do!
I do hope you get it sorted soon and have a more comfortable journey with your stoma.
    Take care

  • Hi Charlotte,

I'm used to the outside surrounding skin bleeding, especially after my stoma is very active, but this is a new problem! It's the top of the stoma, still outside but where the opening is! I'm loathe to get in touch with stoma nurses again but I have got a new community nurse,bI haven't met her, so I might give her a ring! My team are lovely but they just seem to be indifferent! Maybe they really don't see it as a problem or maybe it's because I'm approaching the 5 year mark! Whatever it is, I definitely need help, even if it's only reassurance!

    Thanks again for your reply,

    Moira x

  • Oh Ann,

I'm so sorry you aren't great these days! I thought that once you'd got over your reversal, you'd be fine! It's a damned shame! I'm also so sorry about your husbands Parkinson's, it a terrible disease! There isn't a lot anyone can say Ann, just know that you and your husband are in my thoughts! Sending you both love and hugs,

    Moira xx

  • Moira, I’m so sorry to read of your continued issues. This isn’t right, and someone should be giving you answers to get you sorted, as I’m sure this must be something that’s happened to people in the past.

I never use stoma powder as I didn’t ever get on with it when I tried it in the early days, but I wouldn’t have used it on the stoma itself, only on the skin around it.

When I order my stoma supplies, the company always asks how things are, and they have a stoma nurse as part of their team who I can see if I wish, or speak to on the phone or video call. Do you have any similar service?

I’ve never had any contact with my colorectal surgeon post surgery as he was only one of 3 for my op, but if I were having issues I would go back to my lead gynae surgeon and I’m sure she would get me seen by colorectal. I would be telling them that you can’t go on like this-it’s horrible for you-and you need some practical help. It’s time to be stamping your feet a bit here I think, Moira!

  • Hi  Sarah,

I quite agree, it's definitely time I was given some help! This continuous round of constipation followed by diarrhoea, bis causing all sorts of problems, the broken skin which turned nasty a couple of months back and now this! I find the stoma powder good, to a certain degree but I'm not sure about putting it near the actual opening of the stoma! My supplier doesn't have the service you've got, I wish they had! My nurses are good, don't get me wrong,  they tell me how to dress wounds and things but nobody seems to understand that the cause of it all is the neverending constipation and diarrhoea! I've gone over and over it with them! Remember when I was getting lumps around my stoma and they told me it was unpassed poo and gave me stronger laxatives! Well, it's still happening, laxatives or not! And as I said, my surgeon is just so proud of his skills at forming the stoma! Sorry to go on and on, but it's driving me mad! I think your right, time I had a hissy fit!

Thanks for listening Sarah, venting has helped!

  • I'm quite concerned that it's coming from the top of your stoma. Is it possible that it's coming from inside your colon? I'd go back to the colorectal surgeon and get this checked out. When was your last colonoscopy?

Bleeding on the outside is normal but I don't think this is.

  • Hi Susan,

From what I've read, the stoma itself has a lot of blood vessels and because of the constant constipation, followed by diarrhoea, I'm cleaning it a lot! So I need, more than anything, to get the stoma to settle down! I'm going to contact my new stoma nurse tomorrow and ask to see a dietician! Fingers crossed that helps!  Thanks Susan,
