Bleeding

I'm bleeding from the opening of stoma, after my usual constipation followed by diarrhoea! I'm using the stoma powder but don't know if it'll do more harm than good! Any ideas please? Honestly, you'd think I'd be an expert after 4years + but I'm still learning!

  • Hi Moira

So sorry you are not getting the support you should have.

With the diarrhoea and constipation I have used on occasion  immodium and apple sauce at times they seem to help. I noticed my ups and downs happen once a month don't know whether its hormonal or not.

I have diabetes so I fall between a rock and a hard place with diet advice. They say brown bread, rice, pasta for my diabetes and white bread, rice, pasta for stomas.

You have to experiment with different staple foods its a pain but you gain some knowledge of what might help stability. With regard to the bleeding I get that when I'm constipated delicate veins just inside the stoma  head so the hospital said. I have had little clots which can be awful to see in the bag.

Keep your chin up after all because of this surgery we are all still waking up every day.

    xx

  • Hi Kellie,

I had a home visit from the stoma nurse a couple of weeks ago and she reassured me such a lot! I asked her what on earth I could eat and she said 'anything'! If only! Like you, I'm diabetic, so I have to be careful with that! The diabetic nurses are going mad because I'm putting weight on! If I try to diet I upset the stoma, if I please the stoma, I upset the nurses! I think it's just going to have to continue with trial and error! I suppose we have to just laugh and remember, as you said, we can still wake up every day! Thank you so much for your reply Kellie, it helps to know someone else is having the same issues!

    Take care,

  • Hi Moira

I’m so glad you got some reassurance from the home visit-sometimes we just need that from a professional!

I was newly diagnosed with diabetes this year and didn’t  get any useful advice from the diabetic nurse at my surgery. But I have completely changed my diet and am managing to lose weight as a consequence.

I’m lucky in that I can eat anything I want, so I’ve concentrated a lot on moving to wholemeal instead of white stuff for pasta etc, no sugary stuff or snacking. I’m on codeine 4 times a day for my arthritis, so initially I had concerns about constipation, but not had that at all-my output is firmer than before, but frequent!

I also have kidney disease which brings its own issues but if I listened to all the “do not eat or drink”stuff for each of my conditions I’d not be able to have anything! I’ve been following a moderation in all things kind of policy, so I’ll be interested to see how my diabetes results are at my next blood test!

  • Hi Sarah,

I've been Diabetes Type 2 for about 15 years and my bloods are always fine, as is my cholesterol! I've never really limited myself, apart from the obvious, not eating too many sweets but saying that, my son is a fantastic baker, so I'm quite naughty at times! Now however, I can't eat wholemeal bread, can't eat fruit too often and have to watch what veg I eat! Like you, I take codeine for arthritis, plus I have COPD! I could go on and on but the bottom line is, I'm putting so much weight on that I'm scared to eat! It's not easy to exercise either! I wish I could just take a pill instead of food each day! We should get all the nurses together in one room and get them to work out a diet plan! Good luck at your diabetes check!

  • Hi Moria

Snap then I have had my two stomas in one bag (pinky and perky) for 4 years in November. I live in Spain although I spent most of my life in the UK. My original stoma nurse was brilliant this new one is not so good.

As far as my diet I try to keep my meals smaller than other family members which I feel helps me and I stick to the diabetes advised menu. I have to many problems  with white rice, bread and pasta that's why I take Forseca (immodium) maybe once or twice a month.

My endocrinologist said she was happy because  with all the problems I have  with a reading as close as possible to the ideal.

Then her assistant whom I call data man is more concerned with his charts.

So concerned that he didn't know I had stage 4 cancer so piff to the non human medical staff the caring far outweigh them.

Carry on living the high life

  • They want to spend a day living as us! Then they'd know how difficult it is to survive! I don't mean to sound ungrateful, of course I am very thankful, from the bottom of my heart, but each specialist is naturally concerned about their bit, while we have to live with all of it!  Oh well, keep calm and carry on, as the saying goes, with a few laughs along the way!

  • Hi Moira

sorry to hear that you’re still having issues with this.
for the stoma nurse to say “Eat  anything” has riled me.
How can anyone with a stoma eat anything?

    Argh!

Now if the diabetes nurses are concerned about you gaining weight and your stoma demands you eat low fibre high sugar and salt ( mine did) then maybe they can decide to allow you both!
    Manjaro injections would help!

    Thats a thought. Isn’t it?

Trouble with that. Trumps increased the price beyond belief

I’m talking as someone that tried it and found it fantastic. I paid privately and my levels were great and I lost a stone.

Trump stopped me…. I can’t afford it so I swapped to Wegovy and it doesn’t agree with me

Although I am now reversed my diet is still beige and low fibre

I can block easily and my bowel overreacts to high fibre

    Take care my friend. X

  • Hi Ann,

I think my reaction to the Stoma nurse was open mouthed shock! I've told her over and over about the hard lumps I get when I get constipated, how much pain I'm in! I've told her what happens if I eat even a little fruit! It just seems unbelievable that I'm asking for advice and this is what I get!

I begged my diabetes nurse for the weight loss jab but at the time, my sugars were within the normal rate, so I couldn't get it! The plan was for it to start being more widely available soon but then, Trump struck! I'd love to get it privately but there's no way I could afford it! I am really at my wits end! But I still try to laugh and not get too down!

Lovely to hear from you Ann,

  • Dear Moira

I echo exactly what you’re saying and feel for you.
    Rock and Hard place

That’s you and you’re not having advice that helps

I gained two stone after my reconnection

I don’t use the term reversal as for reverse seems to imply go back to.
That’s not the case. I’ve had a large section removed and it’s not the same

    Anyway I’m waffling

I went through a reputable chemist and my GP authorised the private script and for four months.

    bliss

    Then Trump

Now Wegovy that is affordable but it makes me feel sick

I am really fed up too

I am trying to get fitter as my husband needs more care and as I’ve had major lung surgery it’s impossible for me to exercise without becoming breathless and hot

I think you may have more support from your GP. They are the ones in charge of all of you.
Might be worth making an appointment (if you have one)

We have been taken over by A I

    ha ha.

Goodness I’ve not been here for months and I’m sure taking a lot of space now

    Keep trucking my friend

    Xx

  • I'm like you Ann, I don't write anything for ages, then I seem to be on for ages! It's so nice to catch up though!

I've put on 2 stone in the last year, what with stoma problems and not being able to exercise! I have Emphysema as well as diabetes, so the weight is affecting my breathing! I also have neuropathy, so I can't feel my feet most of the time, making it difficult to walk! Plus I'm shrinking, only 4-11 now, so my weight is a real problem! I can see a doctor, IF I'm on the phone and ready to go, from 8 am! I might just do that, I'm determined to have lost a bit of weight before my granddaughters arrive at Xmas!

You've had such a rough time Ann, I hope your husband is doing ok! It's so hard isn't it? My husband isn't too good either, he's lost the sight in one eye, due to glaucoma and has Pulmonary Fibrosis too! He worries about me and I worry about him! What a life! But at least we still wake up each morning!

    Take care Ann
