Hi all

In December 2020 I was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, which affected lymph nodes bowels and spleen I also had stage 4 malignant tumour in my small intestine and a blockage so the intestine had to go. I was lucky the surgeon managed to save my spleen. I’m not keen on the medical label and the stoma nurse encouraged me to name . I chose George. I named him after George from the TV show Rainbow I watched when I was a kid. I have a photo of Rainbow’s George on the bedroom door of the room I live in the care home. At 56 I am the youngest resident in the home, the average age is about 90, and I was the first and only resident with an ileostomy.  I have little in common with the others so it is a bit lonely. But I always have George for company. Does any of you have name for yours and if so - what?

I wish you peace

  • Hi M,

I've had my stoma, Brooke, a couple of years now, after a colostomy! I think quite a few of us on here fancied a giggle and set about swapping names for our little friends! Artsie Ann even did little, cute and very funny, emjos of them! My Brooke was so named because of the way she gurggled and flowed, although there have been quite a few other, not polite, names I've called her under my breath, over the last 2 years!

Hopefully, you'll get a few laughs with the names people tell you!

    Best Wishes,

    Moira

  • Hi

I have 2 stomas-urostomy and colostomy, kindly depicted by  in my avatar. I called them Boris and Donald after Johnson and Trump because one is full of poo, and one is full of pee!

It must be hard to be living in a care home and feeling a bit lonely amongst the other residents. I would echo Kath’s advice to pop onto the community for a chat whenever you’d like to-we’re a friendly bunch here and always happy to chat.

  • Boris, you say?

That's the name I chose for the saddle pulmonary embolism I had a few months before my cancer diagnosis. Unexpected, unwelcome, caused utter chaos and couldn't be got rid of soon enough.

My cancer I chose to call Kelvin, after Kelvin Mackenzie suggested having a "jeer for nurses" evening because he didn't think they should go on strike.

Haven't given a name to my stoma, though. Yet.

  • When we were 3 days post op and trying to get used to the ileostomy, we decided to try to approach it positively. This device is allowing you to have the cancer cut out, and will see you through til it's time to get it reversed. It helping to safe your life! I came across a painting by Goya 'The water carrier' or' Aguadora' in Spanish. It depicts a woman carrying a big water container on hor right hip. Quite appropriate! So we called the pouch etc 'Dora'. She's become the 3rd member of our household!

  • I’ve only just seen this  so my apologies for the late response. I had a pulmonary embolism in the middle of my first round of cancer treatment but didn’t think to name it! I am in complete agreement with the adjectives used to describe yours however!

Get thinking of a stoma name now!

  • Hi I like your name Dora. It makes me think of Dora the Explorer

Back when I had my Whoopi I put up the same post and some names really were memorable. Gollum , Piglet as he was always close to Poo. That was crankshafts. Brilliant I thought. Another one was Moaning Myrtle you have got to be a Harry Potter fan to know the character.
    But anyway.

There’s pages and pages of names back in that post. Some hilarious

  • Aw… l love this light-hearted post. I have had my stoma for 10 months now. I hated him at first and didn’t name him. Then l started calling him ‘my little friend’ but recently l have named him Mr Pooh. I am sorry you were lonely when you posted this. I hope you have found someone that you have something in common with to keep you company.

  • Hi Onk

I totally agree with you. Light hearted is refreshing and we all need that at times.
There’s some amazing names for stomas that really make me smile when I think about them and why they were chosen

I decided early on that I was going to thank my stoma for saving me and address her with a name. I took a while to decide. It wasn’t fast but it certainly made it easier at 3.a.m.when Whoopi was whoopsadaisy!  It’s a good way to get through

    Take care
