Hi all
just after some advice. I have had my stoma for a week. I am home and all was going ok.
Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any movement in my stoma for 24 hours now and it does feel a bit more tender. As it’s the weekend; there isn’t anyone I can ring so thought I’d see if any of you had any ideas of what I can do.
Thanks
Helen
Hi TB123
Can I just add something here about travel as I’m about to go on my 4th trip abroad this year in a couple of weeks and have travelled often with 2 stomas to different countries. In my experience going through the security scanner will identify that you have something on your body. From there, I have always been taken to a private room for a further check which has involved either being patted down, by a woman-always same sex staff as yourself- or been asked to lift my top to show my bags. Every single member of staff has been discreet and respectful, and told me they see this on a daily basis so are familiar with it. Never once in all my trips have I had any issues or arguments and found staff at all airports to be polite and understanding. Don’t let a bag put you off!

Sarah Hi thank you so much a very much welcome information appreciated, i will give it a try local first, when ever i go out dentist etc i do not eat or drink at all until i get back because of the fast producing and also i should have said because of the damage to the water pipe from radiation in 2004 i do have leaking also so not easy but i take onboard your tips and may try Marrakesh long weekend
Just now looking at a product Natura Durahesive Moldable Skin Barrier with Accordion Flange like a high collar to prevent leakage any thought?????
many thanks TB123
Hi again
I haven’t heard of that particular product but I do use 2 different things to help with adhesion and leak prevention with my bag. I use Coloplast Brava Elastic strips which stick round each side of my bag after it’s on, and I also use Independence Fusion Applicators, which are like little lollipop sticks with extra adhesive which I wipe over my skin before putting the bag on. I use these for my urostomy, but they can be used for colostomy/ileostomy bags and both have been absolute game changers for me. Hope you can find something helpful.

Sarah i have printed out your tips thank you and will look it up, what should have said its to keep the skin away from what comes out like a roll up collar just seem it today and sent for a sample you put it on like an 8805 Adapt ring which i always use and then roll the collar up onto the stoma about half way giving a good seal between the skin and what comes out protecting the skin
a good learning curve this for me, needs to done a big part of life now, no complaints at all prostate cancer at 2003 i should not be here by average !
hope you have a good next trip i will certainly give a go after your advice thank you again
I have also just tried TR205 Pearls 100 per box trio health care 0800 531 6280 careline@triohealthcare.co.uk
umm jury is out the idea is these put onto the bag and turn into GEL taking in any liquid to enable longer sleep and time away without any liquid sloshing not sure yet they just seem to take up space as gel
cheers tony
Hi Tony
It’s really good to be able to try samples to see how they work. In fact I just had an email yesterday from Trio about a new type of bag with a silicone adhesive so I’m going to send for a sample. I know about the pearls but haven’t needed to try them as I have a colostomy and the output is very different to an ileostomy-much more solid and happens less often!
I’ve tried loads of different things over the past couple of years by way of free samples from companies-different bags, adhesives solutions, paste, gel, all sorts. The companies are very happy to send out lots of stuff in the hope you’ll start using their products. Some have been good and I’ve incorporated them into my life, and some haven’t been so good so I’ve not continued. It’s all trial and error in the early days I found, but I’m at a place now where I’m happy with all my different products and I’ve found what works for me. A critical thing, as you’ve found, is keeping your skin protected from the output which can make it sore. Life can be miserable with sore skin round your stoma! Rings are excellent for that.
I’m heading off to the Canaries on this trip, but I’ve been as far as the Maldives this year and coped really well with the 2 flights and speedboat ride to get to our island after a 3 hour taxi trip to Manchester! I refuse to let stomas rule my life and dictate what I do and I love to travel.

Sarah wow nothing is stopping you you have given me great confidence and i will certainly get on with it i certainly do not ever get depressed with it just a part of life nuisance at times let me know your reaction to the new bag please i am still looking and listening to tips and advice extremely helpful to a new comer
Don’t get me wrong-I do get fed up at times having 2 stomas to deal with when they both act up at the same time! It can be frustrating and exhausting, but the good days outweigh the bad. I’ll report back on this new bag once I try it out-Trio health care products have been very good in my experience and they are often at the forefront of new research and development.
I’ve had 2.5 years of dealing with all of this, and I’ve picked up lots of tips from others along the way, and I’m happy to share anything I’ve found useful if it helps. I was very wary of going abroad, but bit the bullet, and now am able to change bags in a loo on the plane, and deal with unexpected leaks with the minimum of fuss. I go swimming, eat and drink what I want within reason, and I really try to be positive and always look for the silver lining in any cloud no matter how dark. Keep smiling Tony

Hi Sarah I did note earlier you said TWO stomas gosh, yes i did think how about trying to do a change on a plane would work, i was considering a no drink no eat from door to door each way, just had a simple sandwich for breakfast and the stoma started producing within minutes before i finished eating very fast, just two small slices of bread+meat, the bags i use are the Hollister 56900 drainable I rinse out between changes, i have applies yesterday for a sample of the new Trio new type of bag with a silicone adhesive, thank you for that, ok time to take rubbish out etc
yes i do not think about it much, hey cancer has gone,
gran kids coming over later for an hour. two 7 year old girls they plan.
all the best Tony
