New stoma stopped working!

Hi all

just after some advice. I have had my stoma for a week. I am home and all was going ok.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any movement in my stoma for 24 hours now and it does feel a bit more tender. As it’s the weekend; there isn’t anyone I can ring so thought I’d see if any of you had any ideas of what I can do.

Thanks

Helen

  • Hi Hpf2011 welcome to the forum. Given that things have slowed down and no one is available I would give 111 a call and see if someone can have a look at this for you and reassure you if nothing else.

Best Wishes for a good outcome for you.

  • Hi

Its frightening when this happens when you’re used to a certain output amount

Are you a colostomy or Ileostomy ?

Hope you have some support from 111

  • Hi Helen,

the advice I was given by 111 was to increase my fibre intake but I've had my stoma almost 2 years! Maybe a small glass of fresh orange juice? I'm sure lots of the group will write, we're a friendly bunch on here!

    Best Wishes,

  • Hi

I hope you are now sorted, but just wanted to say that with a colostomy it’s possible that it does not produce any output for a time without that being a concern. I sometimes go 2 days with nothing, and it will depend on what I’ve been eating and drinking. I just wanted to say not to assume it’s not working, but I hope all is well now.

  • Hi Artsie Ann

I have a colostomy. It is still pretty windy… but just no output!

Saw a doctor late last night who believed that the bowel appeared to be doing what it should and sounded ok. Which made me feel a little better.

Going to increase my fibre a little see if that helps.

  • Thanks Moira. That’s pretty much what they said to me. Maybe I was just being too cautious with my fibre intake.

    will see what today brings!

  • Hi Sarah

    Thanks for the reply.

i did see a doctor last night and they had a listen and believed that the bowel sounded like it was doing what it should.

As of this morning still no output but it is being windy so maybe things are on the move?? I am going to increase my fibre a little see if that helps.

Its all a learning curve isn’t it!!

  • Hi Helen

It definitely is at the start! Mine didn’t work at all for a week after surgery but I had wind, so the doctors weren’t concerned. I was still in hospital then so I was reassured things would be ok, and they were in time, Sometimes it’s just slow, but still ok. I’m quite happy when I have a day with nothing nowadays, but I know we’re kind of obsessive about checking when it’s new. A bit more fibre or some fresh orange juice might give it a move on, but glad you’ve been checked out for peace of mind.

  • Hi Helen

Thats good news that you’re checked and your bowels active. Winds good so I’ve been told. I had a reversal and they let me out without any bowel movement just air. I thought it was hilarious.
I had an Ileostomy and they’re fast and furious I’ve heard that Colostomy’s are a more chilled affair. After all the output has further to come

Hope you have a good day and not too windy

    Take care
