Reaction to Flat but not Convex same company

This is going to sound crazy.

The stoma nurse is in disbelief

I was given flat bags to come home with last year, had leaks and sore skin  so was changed to convex with Eakin slims two weeks after hospital discharge

Been okay since and stoma now is not flat. I wanted to try the flat bags as the continual pressure of the convex and ring is making my skin around the stoma dented.
So see the nurses and change to flat.
Happy as anything for a few hours.

Then have reaction under the plate it felt alive and inflamed
Changed back to convex with calamine  and air time.

I phoned the nurses to ask if they could not change my script just yet.

Ordered more convex that arrived in twenty for hours. Phew!

The nurses just said but it’s the same adhesive.
I agree it is the same adhesive.

Is this just me or is it the shape of the flat causing a heat reaction
So I’ve now cleared up the skin and applied a flat one see if I react the same

Has anyone had similar?
I have  just read that convex can damage the stoma so I am now paranoid!
How can it damage the stoma?

  • Gosh I hope you get sorted.you really dont want to be sore.

I hadnt heard that convex can damage the stoma.I do hope not as Ive used them for 3 yrs and am really happy with them (once I persuaded my delivery providers to cut off the annoying belt loops)

Do let us know how you get on

    Kath

  • Thanks Kath. I read it yesterday in an article and I thought that you used them. That’s a relief then. Three years and that’s good enough for me. I think we have to be very careful about articles we read because you never know if it’s user errors or company based

    That’s really reassuring thank you

I’ve bought a usb charging small desk fan. I take it into the bathroom when I change and let my stoma have some air. It’s great for drying the calamine def recommend

Have a good day. We have sun in the south. Few clouds but nice and bright

  • Hi you say you use calamine.I use convatec powder.only a tiny bit or the bag wont stick.works for me to make sure I am super dry

  • Hello Ann,

If the problem repeats then it may be that the assumption that the adhesive is the same is faulty.  My apologies if that's already been checked with the manufacturer.  It could be different if the manufacturer buys in baseplates complete with adhesive and protective film, branded as necessary, and then assembles the pouches.  If they source flat plates and convex plates from different suppliers the adhesive might conform to requirements but be chemically different.   Or I could be having another senior moment!  Wink

Glad to see you're enjoying our southern weather - just wish it would rain properly, though.

    Cheers,  Roy

  • That’s a really good thought in fact I just told my hubby and he said. That’s what I said. Though he didn’t explain it like you. He just said they use different adhesive.
    It does make sense.
Thanks very much. I think this will be an interesting post for others in the future that have the same issue.
Before my op I was really concerned about how my skin would react to wearing a pouch as I’m allergic to plasters. It was okay with the convex so it may be that the chemicals in those are tolerable. I’m experimenting anyway. I’ve got a flat on in today.
Sorry you’ve not had a downpour we did and now have fresh air. Thank goodness

  • Sorry typo. Yes calamine. I use it when I get a flare up. I was told about it here. It soothes and cools. Only a tiny amount. I didn’t know about powder.
The fan is brilliant Kath it really drys the area perfectly. Probably give it a miss in winter.

  • Hi Ann

I get the same with flat pouches.  Sore and itchy and feels like there's a leak but when I remove them there's no leak or seepage.  Yet, I'm fine with the convex ones.  I sometimes get pancaking with the flat ones and wondered if that caused it, but don't really know to be honest.  Like you, I'm allergic to plasters (and loads of other things).  I also have to watch what adhesive remover I use.  Luckily, I've found a Respond one that's good as I have to pay for that myself.

Hope you get sorted out soon (and good luck for all the procedures you've got lined up this week).

    Take care. x

  • Thanks BlueBlue

it’s good to know that I’m not alone. The stoma nurse hadn’t heard of it before saying that the flat ones are more comfortable.
I was beginning to think it was my imagination

Im trying one today just to see but may take it off to go to bed.

  • Thanks for the tip Kath! I use convex for my urostomy and find the loops very annoying but didn’t think about asking for them to be cut off! I had also never heard of the potential for damage to the stoma with convex bags.

  • Hi Ann

When I have soreness and use calamine I put some on a cotton pad, wipe it round and then dry gently with the hairdryer on a low heat. Might be more appealing than a fan in the winter! I tried the powder but didn’t like it at all, and I find the calamine much easier and more effective both for soothing the skin and for the bag sticking.
