Heat, stoma, salt and swollen ankles

My ileostomy causes me some dehydration and the advice is to rehydrate with isotonic fluids containing salt rather than water, and to add salt to meals (though the advice for high blood pressure is to reduce salt).

Meanwhile, my ankles have ballooned during the heatwave and the advice is to cut down on salt and drink lots of water.

In addition, we are suppose to elevate our feet but also to exercise.

Does anyone know how to reconcile the conflicting advice in a stoma friendly way?

(I slept last night with my feet elevated but it didn't help).

  • Yes getting up from being down is a challenge and hopefully worth it.

Please let me know if it works and it wasn’t a fluke

  • I will, Ann. I’m flying again on Thursday so that’s a chance to try it out. I don’t want to go through the swollen feet and ankles like I had last time. Could hardly get my flip flops on! Joy

  • That’s what my feet were like. Tree trunks with puffy feet growing out of my Birkenstocks. It actually hurt to walk.
Where are you flying off to Sarah?

  • hi Catgirl 2 My Macmillan Nurse advised Lucozade  SPORT which helps to replace electrolytes  lost. St Mark's Solutuon is something else my surgeon suggested. It's a mixture of salt, sugar and bicarbanate of Soda. You could look up the quantities. It's disgusting do I add lime juice. KathH2.

  • We’re off to Zante on Thursday-all being well-for a week. Unless the airport closes (Doncaster) and unless TUI cancel- wouldn’t be the first time! My feet were huge the last time!

  • Hi KathH2. I agree, both disgusting.  It's hard to tell whether they work too. I've tried adding various things to St Mark's but haven't found anything I want to drink in quantity. I've always preferred water given a choice but I  know that's  a Bad Thing with an ileostomy.

  • I love Locozade Sport I used to treat myself when I was a serious gym goer. Now I have a cheap isotonic 50p drink no fizz. How the mighty have fallen.

  • Thank you so much Ann. It’s a decent airport so will be sad if it closes, as it’s handy for us. Will be keeping everything crossed it goes ahead and my feet behave!
