My ileostomy causes me some dehydration and the advice is to rehydrate with isotonic fluids containing salt rather than water, and to add salt to meals (though the advice for high blood pressure is to reduce salt).
Meanwhile, my ankles have ballooned during the heatwave and the advice is to cut down on salt and drink lots of water.
In addition, we are suppose to elevate our feet but also to exercise.
Does anyone know how to reconcile the conflicting advice in a stoma friendly way?
(I slept last night with my feet elevated but it didn't help).
Hi Catgirl2
I suffer from swollen ankles when I travel so badly it’s difficult to walk.
Then I found a technique that really worked for me.
Lie flat on your back on the floor with your bottom facing chair or sofa. Bend legs up and rest feet / calf’s on seat cushion it’s really comfy and has quick results for me Hope this works for you too and that improves your ankles

Thanks for asking Katz51. I settled on Sensura Mio Light Convex 2-piece together with Salts mouldable seals. It's not perfect as my stoma is quite flat, in a dip and has 2 exits very near the edge at opposite ends resulting in one patch that is always sore no matter what I do. But I can often keep a flange on for 48 hours with leaks about once or twice a week. I still don't feel confident to go far from home though. My bowel consultant has suggested a remodelling of my stoma but probably not soon as it won't be a priority. At least it's an improvement on a year ago.
Thanks Artsie. I'm afraid I can't get on or off the floor nowadays but I have been elevating my legs - maybe not enough. I have an adjustable bed and slept with my legs up last night. I think it might have helped my right side but my left side seems even worse today. I suppose it could be made worse by my peripheral neuropathy. Walking is harder today.
I’m sorry Catgirl2.
That was thoughtless of me. My hubby couldn’t do it either so I should have thought of that.
it is possible on the sofa and bed too. It’s the height above the heart that does it.
I hope that you have a better day tomorrow.
These things can become a challenge. Just keeping hydrated I’m finding hard. My mouth is dry continuously with my ileostomy. Drinking all the time I’m spending most of the day in the toilet.
Take care
Ann
That’s a good tip I’m going to try Ann! Thank you.

My feet were like absolute balloons when I got to the Maldives-it was horrendous! Worst I’ve ever experienced, so I want to try and reduce that next time.
Mind you, once I get on the floor I’ll be struggling to get up!
