Everyone must be bored silly hearing me go on about this but I've had another few weeks of constant diahorrea followed by constipation! I take Immodium to stop and Senna to start! It would be funny if it wasn't ruining my life! My stoma nurse adviced taking 1 Senna every night, which I did on Saturday! Sunday only a very little output but Monday, OMG!! One gurggle and that was it, bag nearly bursting off my body and it just wouldn't stop! Sorry to be so graphic but it was horrendous! This time I haven't taken Immodium and it did stop after an hour or so! This morning I phoned the Stoma Clinic and I've been told to go back to bland foods! I haven't a clue how to make something interesting out of mashed potatoes, chicken and white rice, no veg ! Oh, forgotten bananas and smooth peanut butter! I hate sounding so sorry for myself, apologies everyone! It wouldn't be so bad if I knew WHY this is happening after 16 months but no-one seems to know!

Apologies again,

Moira x

  • Thanks, Kath. It seems to me he might be similar to you. Glad you got over it all. His is labelled scar tissue. xx

  • Hope everyone is well and keeping hydrated! Things are continuing just the same for me, terrible loose stools one day, followed by no output for the next 4 days, give or take a day! I still haven't got around to sending a sample in, my husband's eye operation has taken priority, but I will! I'm keeping a food diary but, as my diet is so bland it's giving me no clues!

Can anyone give me any tips on why my pouch can go from empty to nearly bursting within seconds, with no warning? I know I'm asking for the impossible here but does anyone else get this? I'm beginning to feel like some sort of freak!!

    Keep smiling,

    Moira x

  • Hi Moira

If your pouch is empty for four days I would imagine that it will fill quickly once it starts.  it must be so annoying and I expect it always happens right when you don’t want it to.
I haven’t got any answers I’m sorry. Ileostomy’s empty continually every two to three hours I’m in the toilet. Strange thing is I’m used to it and if my bag doesn’t fill I immediately go back in my mind as to what I’ve eaten and did I chew it enough.

What happens if you eat high fibre for the whole day? No beige only colourful foods , salads etc

Hope your okay apart from Brooke misbehaving

  • Hi Moira

I'm so sorry to read about all the bother you're having.

The hint my colorectal nurse gave me if ever there was a time I felt colicky or blocked was to drink a wee glass of something fizzy.  I've never needed to use it so can't vouch for it but it might be worth a VERY cautious try. Fresh orange juice also helps to loosen things a bit.

If my output feels a bit loose I eat half a banana or something with stewed apple in it and that usually works really well.

I hope that you get sorted out soon as it sounds very wearing and you must be so fed-up.

    best wishes

  • Hi Ann,

Well I was told by my stoma nurse to take a senna every day, thank God I didn't! I think I'd rather be like you than like this! It's really getting me down! I had no output for 4 days, took a senna, had small output for 2 days, so took another senna! Fool that I am, I had a small amount of diahorrea for 2 days then, yesterday, thank goodness I've gone back to the pouches you can empty! It's like a flaming horror film! I wouldn't care, all I'd eaten was a small bowl of cornflakes and a boiled egg sandwich later! I've never eaten high fibre food, unless constipated, for about 6 months now! I don't think I'd dare leave the toilet!

I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself to tell the truth, which I hate! I know there are so many people going through so much more! I'm going to sort this out if it's the last thing I do!

Sorry to be a moaner (AGAIN)! Hope you had a great time in Ireland!,

    Moira x

  • Hi Moira

Youre not moaning you’re feeling controlled by your output. It’s overwhelming especially in this heat.
I wish I had the answer for you.
Before my op I had to think about everything I ate. I was only able to produce ribbon poo and if I ate too much fibre I would be tied to the toilet. It was awful. It stopped me from going out and enjoying eating.
So I really hope that you can get some useful advice from here.
Senna can be really strong in tablet form  maybe a more gentle way forward would be a dulcoease capsule may be a good alternative. One a day may help.

  • Hi BlueBlue,

I've had basically the same advice, plus to eat jelly babies when loose! My problem is, they work short term  but then after eating the bananas say, I then go constipated again! It seems to be a never ending cycle! I'm terrified of going out unless I know there's a toilet ver near by!

Thank you for your help, it means a lot,

  • Hi Three,

My husband is still in hospital after 3 weeks trying to sort him out. I think he is having Gastrografin tomorrow, which is a mild laxative. There is a chap opposite him who has been in there for 7 weeks. He went in only able to eat 1 fish finger before feeling full. Today he was tucking in to a roast chicken dinner. I hope my husband ends up as good without being sick!!

And yesterday his pouch filled up twice within half an hour. Today its having a rest!!! xx

  • So sorry to read about your husbands problems I cant offer any advice as I have an iliostomy and I am guessing he has a colostomy.

I just wanted to wish you both well and I have Fingers crossedFingers crossedfor you that it soon gets sorted.

    Kath

  • Hi NannyAnny

I just wanted to second Kaths wishes. I really hope that your husband gets some help. He’s been struggling since before Christmas. You’re both having a rotten time.
