Hello …
I have had my stoma over six weeks now and all seems to be going well with it (few small hiccups but nothing major). I am now back at work and so far so good. I am supposed to be running the Great North Run in September so was thinking of starting to run again soon… my concern is supporting the stoma so it isn’t moving around and pulling at the skin. Sometimes it can feel uncomfortable if it’s starting to fill up/full and it’s unpredictable when this happens.
Any advice/tips/recommendations would be appreciated. I have seen support belts online… anyone got one of these?
Hope you are all having a good weekend.

Hi. I have seen the support belts too though have no experience with them as I am not into training to warrant that expense. I bought two cozy band type belts thinking I would need them but I felt crushed so they are hidden away somewhere.
I found the best for me is big pants light/medium support.
It may be worth your while trying that whilst you’re training before having the support belt made.
Think they’re made to measure and support the bag which would be brilliant for the run. Hopefully someone will pop along with experience

Hi Catz321
I had a support belt for a hernia when I had my ileostomy from a company called SuportX. They were very helpful and if they dont have what you need I am sure they can tell you where to get something. Just search SuportX.
Good luck on the run, are you raising money for a particular charity
Cheers, John
Thank you Artsie Ann
I think I will give my stoma nurse a call see what she thinks but big pants with support is on the shopping list.
I’ve recently bought pants to cover the whole bag which I think only really make me feel it’s more protected but doesn’t really provide support but that’s fine for walking about and doing normal dato day stuff. Running… I have this image of it bobbing about and feeling uncomfortable although I’m not planning on anything extreme. I just can’t predict when it will become active and start filling up. And the thought of a leak when out running! Guess a lot is trial and error.
Have you picked up your paint brushes yet?
Best wishes
Catz
Thank you Crankshaft
I will look at their website and give them a call.
I have not decided about raising money for a charity partly because this is my third attempt to run it as cancelled in 2020 due to covid and last year I had to defer due to going through chemo radiation during the time.
I have my appointment with my consultant in 3 weeks to find out about my ileostomy reversal … hopefully it will either be sooner than later so I can be fit to train/run it or be after the the run in September hence the reason I don’t want to commit to raising money incase I can’t run it due to reversal. Fingers crossed it will work out.
I hope you are keeping safe and well and enjoying your weekend.

There are some pants made specially to fit stoma bags.they have a sort ofpocket at the front to hold the bag.you can get some on prescription others you pay for.I did get some but personally found them a bit constricting for day to day wear.might be good for running tho.ask your stoma nurse or delivery company for details maybe.

Hi Catz321 This may be the site that Kath was referring to?

I think you used to be able to get 6 items on prescription but might be worth checking with your nurse? Looks like they have some sportswear too x
