Output, Any suggestions, please?

Hi all,

I am having problems with my output. I think I had a bowel obstruction on Wednesday night/Thursday morning and thankfully I went three times yesterday (the output was very thick) but nothing today, even though I have taken 2 Laxido and drank a lot of water. I am not in any pain or discomfort just annoyed and worried. Any help or suggestions, please? Please don’t tell me to contact the stoma nurses as I seem to be always ringing them for one thing or another.

I have a colostomy which I have had since 2016. It has gone from “all singing and dancing” in the early days, to gradually being very slow. I was diagnosed in April with radiation enteritis and in September I was diagnosed with a dropped pelvic floor. And also have an urostomy.

Thank you,

Lisa x

  • Hi LisaCardiff, when I had my first colonostomy (went on to having an illiostomy- which gave me so many blockages I eventually went back to a colonostomy) I slowly, slowly tried different foods in very small portions. Strangely I could eat a more varied diet before 1pm. I have no idea why this should be so.

  • Hi ,

Thank you for your reply and your helpful tips.

I saw my colostomy consultant in September and he said the same thing, “chew, chew and chew and after a while you will be in the habit of chewing a lot”. He then went on to tell me that a lot of his patients don’t chew enough.

I love food but I am terrified of going back in to hospital so I will do and eat what I can. I also take two Ensure drinks a day to help with nutrition.

You are doing extremely well and well done.

    Love and good vibes,

  • Hi ,

Thank you for your reply and I am sorry you had so much trouble when you had an ileostomy. At least a colostomy is much better.

I do try and introduce new foods and if I feel a bit windy or I hear and feel the trapped wind blowing around my abdomen, I won’t try anymore.

  • Hi LisaCardiff,

I haven't been on here for a while. Just busy getting on with things and am back to work now so much less time these days Disappointed

I wanted to say I was sorry to hear you have been having more stoma troubles and glad to read that you seem to be back on track.

Hope it stays that way for you.

    All the best

  • Hi ,

Thank you for your reply and I am glad you are busy and getting everything back on track.

I am okay thank you. I had trapped wind again last week and as I had terrible back pain which came on suddenly and I was pacing the kitchen again. I was worn out the following day but I am having some minor problems. I am doing my best, studying at uni and trying to keep to busy.

Sending you love and good vibes,

    Lisa x

  • hi SarahH21 When going through treatment and an op for bowel cancer I managed to lose three stone and found the Ensure drinks helped me replace the weight lost.
