Hi, I noticed a small sore red rash yesterday the very day that we were going away for the first time since gaining my stoma.
This morning it’s doubled in size and as I was away I sorted it quickly and enjoyed the rest of our break.
Now the main concern is that I have I am allergic to plasters! Which if my body rejects my pouch I’m in serious trouble.
I phoned my nurse she’s said to use calamine and that it happens a lot, she’s posting me some new pouches to try though I feel I have to use the ones I’ve got as I’m trying to do my bit for the planet.
Any tips on how to apply the calamine and does allowing it to air
UPDATE
Its much improved. Thanks for your help
Hi Artsie. Sounds like you have a lovely on the ball stoma nurse. I presume it’s definately a rash and not soreness caused by a bit of leakage? If so then apply the calamine sparingly and make sure it’s dry before putting the bag on. Air drying would probably help but Lily used to get over-excited if I let her play in the fresh air too long and was sick everywhere so be prepared!
I used to like the Salts Confidence with Aloe Extract so you could get some samples if your nurse doesn’t send you that one. Totally understand about using up the old bags -you could ask your nurse if they have any unused collection arrangements or if not have a look at The Jacobs Well Appeal which accept unwanted stoma supplies for sending to third world countries.
Hope things settle down soon for you
Take care

Oh Karen. You really made me laugh. I had this image in my head, I do make little crowns or hats for whoopi. They’re just strips of kitchen roll I make a cylinder and twist. Voila Whoopi has a crown and bib just in case she’s sick.
I haven’t had a leak to cause the rash it just appeared like magic.
I hope that I have some Salts to try however I am pleased with the stick ability of mine and hope this is a blip.
I didn’t realise that I could donate my spares, that’s fantastic news, I am a keen recycler, the older I get the more I’m turning into a real tree hugger.
Thanks for the advice on using the lotion I will give it a go.

hi Artsie, I definitely benefitted from giving the stoma some air. This can be tricky but lying on my bed surrounded by tissues and towels helped. I also use a spray skin protector which I spray around the stoma - this works. I use it every time I change the bag. Your suppliers should be able to help. This redness my Stoma nurse called excoriation.

Hi Kareno62 - doesn't it just? One trip to hospital some years ago resulted in a grapefruit size excoriation round my Stoma - there were no nurses around who knew how to change a stoma bag and so the problem got worse and worse. ( I was too ill at the time to change my bag). Eventually I saw a stoma nurse who helped and told me about the excoriation.
