Any suggestions on how to get some restful sleep?
I am just over four weeks since LAR and managing okay during the day but nighttime’s are a nightmare. Can’t sleep on my left, or right as it causes discomfort. Wedge myself on my back and slide down with neck at right angles. It’s making me really miserable. I’ve had pillows under my legs to start with which did help then but now am able to lie with legs flat without my tummy pulling.
Hi Artsie, It would be worth talking to you Colorectal Nurse or your GP but I would have thought that ordinary pain killers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen would help. Not being able to sleep can be very distressing.
Hope you can find a solution. All the best John
Hi John. Thanks for your thoughts. I am on tramadol which is a good pain killer. The operation site is still very tender so I think I’m more aware of it at night.
best wishes
Artsie.

Hi Artsie, Getting any better? Did you have keyhole or open surgery? I had a LAR with keyhole and am ileostomy, like yourself. The most the hospital gave me was codeine while I was there. At home it was both ibuprofen for anti inflammation and paracetamol for pain, which worked ok. Perhaps your team could try different mixtures that might help you or even just offer something to help you sleep.
Btw, you said in a post about ECU that your hospital was BRI, was that Bromley or Brighton? I was in Bromley.
Cheers, John
Sorry late response John. I had a six hour operation key hole either side camera in the middle and an incision right across like a caesarean He actually lifted my Bowel to get at it Amazing work and I was told six months recovery. So I’m being impatient. I was Bristol Royal Infirmary. They’re the cancer and heart specialists nearest me.I am improving thanks. Best wishes. Artsie

hi Artsie, in the early days when I had my first stoma I had three pillows criss crossed behind hy head and one pillow down both of my sides. I also had and have protective bed protectors. These are about 36 x 36 inches. My Stoma suppliers send these to me and they're free. I also have large black bin liners under the bed sheet for further protection. Taking these neasurea J
