Mucus

I'm in such a panic, I felt as if I wanted to pass faeces, first time this has happened to me since I had my operation 5 months ago! I went and sat on the toilet and was shocked to pass quite a large amount of jelly like mucas! Of course this had to happen just after 5pm, my stoma nurse finishes at 5pm! Has this happened to other people or do I stay in a panic? Crikey, I'm such a wuss but I can't help it, I got a shock!

  • Hi . I remember being in exactly the same situation one weekend and posted on here in a panic. Yes it is quite normal. Your bowel produces mucus to help stools move through it and you can sometimes get the urge to pass this and small amounts of poo too. You did the right thing sitting on the toilet and just letting it work through. It’s a weird feeling after your bottom has been redundant for so long but just a sign that it still works!
Hope this helps and don’t forget you can always ring the nurses on here on 0808 808 00 00

  • Thank you Karen, what a relief! I remember my stoma nurse telling me about it in the very early days but I honestly thought after 5 months it wouldn't happen! I was getting tummy pain last night and this morning, now I know why! Thank you again Karen for your very swift reply, I can breathe again now!

    Take care,
