I had my ileostomy in Jan, over the last couple of months I have started getting really painful spasms up my rectum. They usually happen at night. It feels like cramp and is really painful. Any ideas?
Hi . I’m sorry but I can’t remember having this problem particularly when I had my stoma but perhaps you could give your stoma nurses a ring and run it past them?

Hi,
Is it the sort of pain like you need to go to the toilet?
I also had pains in my bottom following my ileostomy. I sat on the toilet and beared down and passed what I can only describe as a greyish hard lump. This was also at night so I spent a sleepless night panicking that something had badly gone wrong. I spoke to my stoma nurse in the morning and she said it was perfectly normal and it was a build up of mucus from my redundant bowel. She suggested doing the same thing every few days to dispel the mucus and to stop a build up. This works and I just pass clear mucus every few days. She said only if it is discoloured of odorous there is a problem.
It would probably be worth giving your stoma nurse a quick call just to see what they say and just to check if they need to see you. Mine are really reassuring and helpful.
Take care and keep safe x
