I'm not sure if anyone can help - but it's Saturday, and everyone I've called does not work weekends (product manufacturers/stoma nurses). I was guided to this community by members of the Bowel Cancer UK Forum.
I had emergency surgery and this included an ileostomy . . . through open surgery, so I have a 5 inch 'wound' down the centre of my tum, which has been finished off with purple surgical glue. So the wound is clearly visible and I can bath and shower.
I have a stoma, and today, because the swelling in my tummy has gone down almost completely, the flange of the ostomy bag now sits on part of the surgical wound.
My questions are:
1 - will the adhesive from the ostomy bag damage the surgical glue seal of the wound?
2 - when I use the appeel adhesive remover to remove the ostomy bag, will this have an affect on the surgical glue seal of the wound?
My thought is that this is probably all okay, and there is nothing to worry about, but I wanted to check, as the wound is healing so well, and I do not want to compromise that in anyway. The operation was on 13 April.
If anyone can help, has knowledge/experience of this, that would be amazing. Many thanks.
Hi silver,
I had the same issue in that my bag always adhered to one, sometimes 2 of my wounds that were glued. I always used the the remover when in hospital working with the stoma nurses and they never mentioned it and it was never an issue, past the amount you use around that area for fear that it will hurt when you pull! Hope that helps

Thank you - that's really helpful. My logical brain was telling me it would be okay, and my worry brain was a bit concerned. Best wishes.

Welcome to your online community and to stoma support.
I would agree that the pouch adhesive won't damage the surgical wound which after 12 days should be healing quite nicely from the inside out.
What you should be looking for is any lumps forming around your scar if you see some mention to your stoma care nurse
Once the glue has completely come off the wound you may find that you are left with a ridge or an indentation both of which can cause slight problems with your Pouching system and possible leakages. Any part of the pouch flange that doesn't make a good flat seal with your body is a escape route for your output, you can get add on products to help stop this and we can go into this later should it happen.
If you see some blood coming from the wound area when you remove the flange it is nothing to worry about as it will dry up before you attach the pouch.
The site is open 7 days a week and there is usually someone about very early till very late to answer any questions and help with solution finding.
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need help at anytime in the future on any aspect of your stoma management.
