Hi everyone,

I'm sure we are all very concerned about the developing situation with Coronavirus and it has made me think about one of the symptoms of the virus - coughing. Someone was interviewed and he had said about the terrible coughing fits. It reminded me that I didn't have a parastomal hernia until just over a year ago when I had a bad bout of the cold and was constantly coughing. With hindsight I just wished I was wearing hernia support for prevention rather than wait for a hernia to appear and it's too late!

Just really wondering if any ostomates have thought about the effects of constant coughing if they don't have any support for their abdomen? As if we didn't have enough to deal with... :-(

Over the years since I first joined the community and before I became a champ I have made many posts on the subject of parastomal hernias and prevention have put out links to all the companies that supply them and the NHS prescription entitlement.

I wear my support garments daily and have a number of pairs which is necessary as the composition of the material loses its elasticity after about 6 months.

Not being a female my choice of garments is very limited and basic, not exactly fashion accessories but when you look at Comfizz, White Rose or VB the choice is endless but my supplier contacts still keep telling me nothing new in the pipeline in the near future for us gent.

I heeded my surgeon's advice the day after my surgery when he told me forget covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, use your hands to hold your belly in.

Unfortunately all the preventative matters I had in place, didn't hold back my hernia and needed an operation to repair at the same as unblocking my bowel.

After the op surgeon told me, you know they don't last and true to his word. It has returned, apart from pushing forward my stoma I have no other problems with it and having a parastomal hernia is not high on the list of NHS elective procedures.

So I continue my preventative practice by wearing my support boxers and a girdle or a wrap round belt depending on how I feel.

My updated links for all the suppliers are available if you want it, spoke to my supplier contacts a few weeks ago still the same.
