Hi,
Yes, you read it correctly.
I came across an article a while ago and I kept on meaning to put it on here.
When I first had my stoma I had pain in my old back passage and was told it would pass. Then last year the pain started again and it got so bad I went to A&E. I had an X-ray and was told everything was fine to carry on taking pain relief. I looked up it up on Dr. Google and this something some ostomates can/could have, a phantom rectum.
It feel like the need to poo but it passes. I read some people take pain medication and some sit on the toilet until it passes.
Anyway, I wanted to make everyone aware of this phenomenon, it’s like an amputated limb where people can feel the limb.
With kindness,
Hi lisa and all you guys,.
It is true about the phantom rectum, I have got an illostomy which I had done in June 2018 because of anal cancer, can thankfully say I've no evidence for about 18 months now, anyway going back to the phantom rectum, I experiencing it on many occasions and just sit on the loo and the "feeling" usually passes.
It is something I have just got used to now

My bladder was removed last September but I often get the sensation that it’s still there. It’s an odd feeling.Jane
Me too! It drives me nuts! Had relief for about 5 weeks then back with a vengeance! I too have a temporary ilostomy since last August 2019 , Oh , l have not managed well at all! Everything aggravas it! I've not had a day when I've felt comfortable! And this phantom pain it's just enough to tip you over the edge! Hopefully having a reversal, if that doesn't work maybe a permanent stoma would
better, don't know anymore, just need something done!
Hi all,
Thank you for all your replies.
Yes, it is a strange and weird thing. I believe it affects any type of stoma.
I thought I would post something about it, so at least we know what it is.
With kindness,
Lisa

Hi all
It's great that you brought up the subject as it helps to know others are experiencing the same/similar.
It is something you just learn to get used to. It's my war wound now and I love seeing the reactions of others (I've got a hernia now) and many people ask if I'm pregnant and when I say no it's my stoma bag, most people just mumble sorry and move on!
Stay safe everyone
Hi,
I thought I would mention it, as I thought all sorts before and on here you don’t feel so alone.
It’s hard enough with a stoma, which erupts and makes a mess and then doesn’t work very much, so one day your taking loperamide and the next laxido. Then there is the scar tissue pain and then the Phantom rectum.
With kindness,
Lisa
