Well got the news yesterday that I have stage 2 squamous cell carcinoma of the anus and it hasn’t spread. They did initially say I would need a colostomy followed by radiotherapy. However, as my anus is still working they have decided not to do the colostomy and just do radiotherapy maybe a bit of chemotherapy, unless I am unable to have a bowel motion. The only thing is that there is a tumour there which has greatly restricted the size of the opening, and all motions are the size of a large pencil. This means many trips to the loo instead of one or two, also the area is tender. I have a shallow bath every time I use the loo, but it does get sore and the painkillers prescribed cause constipation, not a great help. Now I understand radiotherapy makes your bum sore. Has anyone else had this ? If so what did you do / eat / painkillers etc ?
Hi
I had cancer in the rectum and had chemo tablets alongside radiotherapy. No one advised me about changing to a really low low fibre diet, and which foods irritate the bowels. I did the obvious, switching to white bread, pasta etc. I didn’t realise early enough that salads, and fruit and vegetables could have such a terrible effect during the course and after radiotherapy. I’d speak to your radiotherapy team regarding what changes they would suggest as we’re all different. I’m two weeks post surgery! Wishing you luck.
Hi I had a rectal tumor that was partially blocking and like you they were going to give me a ilostomy before they started radiotherapy and chemotherapy they decided not to and advised me to go on a low residue diet. I have been on this since last March. It did really help . With the radiotherapy and sore botty your team will advise you what to use as you must not use anything with zinc in . They have plenty of options to give you . I also used aloe Vera gel from Holland and Barrett which I kept in the fridge to make it more soothing. I now have had surgery I am stage 3 and have a temporary illostomy which will be reversed when I finish chemotherapy and am still on a low residue diet, so let me know of you need any ideas but if you Google low residue diet plenty come up from various NHS hospitals
Good luck
