Stumbled upon this support community and am pleased to be a new member, thanks. I had my urostomy op nearly 3 weeks ago and am interested in any recommendations anyone has for stoma support/hernia belts that are not cumbersome. I was an active person, running, hiking, diy etc and intend to be again when I'm fully well again. So, I wish to support the area around the stoma at these times to try to stop getting a hernia. Any advice on products/reviews would be most welcome folks

    Hi all

My SupportX rep said that I could have 3 items (mix and match) without any problems. She said that GPs will sign off 3 no problem and may be persuaded to authorise 4-6 if the patient is very active.

I questioned her about 6 items which Bodach had mentioned, she said that is for 6 pairs of cotton ostomy briefs/pants which are not support items but have a pocket inside to hold your bag away from the skin.

They are providing me with 1 of each of 2 items to check fit as I'm not an off the peg size. Because I am aiming to get back to my daily dog walking plus yoga and/or horse riding, I have asked them to authorise 6 items in total.

SupportX have a good range and like sash they make to measure too. I asked about extra protection for horse riding, so she has ordered a pocket to be sewn into the belt plus a guard which is a bit like a man's cricket box.

See who your hospital refers you to, then you can compare online. It is useful to be able to try in your own home before they are ordered.

I shall post a product and service review when they arrive.

Thanks again guys & gals for the info. Next time I go to see the stoma nurse I am going to be looking at samples of Comfizz belts but unfortunately they do not have any SASH belts to look at

  • Hi all

I have a breathable ostomy belt 13.5 cm from Respond which my stoma nurse ordered for me.  She measured me for it, though it is not a made to measure item but comes in a variety of sizes.  I wear it when I go to the gym and also when I’m doing any gardening which is not just general deadheading or potting up of plants.  Any lifting of any sort, I wear it!

As far as gym goes, I’m doing Pilates, some light weights, lunges, squats and then core work such as bridge, adapted planks and so on. I have a personal trainer who knows my medical condition and I’m slowly building up again. My main focus is to build my core strength for health reasons primarily.   I’m 1 year post major surgery when my stoma was formed and 8 months from extra surgery when I had a temporary ileostomy reversed (but I still have a permanent colostomy).

As Ian, says, do go VERY VERY CAREFULLY at the beginning.  Many of us are itching to get back to sports, fitness etc and try to resume our normal lives, but it is so important to recover fully from the surgery and the aim is to try to avoid the dreaded hernia.

    best wishes

Thanks Liz for that but there's not much info or usage photos about it on the website. Does it have a cut out for the bag to pass through?

Would still appreciate any feedback on the SAFF belts

  • Hi

No, the Respond belt is just firm webbing which fastens securely with velcro.

I’ll see if I can find a photo (if I’m allowed to post one)

Thanks again Liz but as it does not have a hole for the bag to pass through it is not suitable for me. As long as it works for you that's all good

SASH is a small company, and so it doesnt have a big PR or sales team.

They just make very good, robust kit, by far the best my husband has experienced.
