Hi i'm daisymayalbie, I have had my ileostomy and fistula since 25 October 2017. I had breast cancer and one round of chemo which perforated my bowel and developed sepsis. I spent 3 months in hospital 3 of the first weeks on intensive care unit with several days in an induced coma . I hate my situation now as it's totally destroyed my confidence and life. I have bad lungs through having pneumonia 4 times so anaesthesia is very difficult as my lungs tend to collapse. I want to reverse my ileostomy and fistula because my flow is constant and I get very sore around where the bag goes. I don't feel I have the support I want it's as if I have to put up and shut up. The chemo has caused other illnesses, RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and diabetes 2 due to having to take Methotrexate for the RA, which also lowers my immunity. Makes me wonder what else it's going to cause. I do try to put on a front and say i'm ok but really i'm not. Has anyone got any tips on coping and dealing with things. I've found family and friends avoiding subject basically because they don't know what to say to help.

  • Hello, hopefully you are doing well ,but l wanted to see if you had it reversed ,my mother is going through the same thing ,and im nervous for her to have the surgury

  • Hi

You have replied to a very old post, and you may have more replies if you make a new post to ask your question. I will tag  into this so she will hopefully see it.

There are lots of posts about reversals in the community, and a dedicated group to discuss this for this with lots of information. If you click on the link I have made it will take you right there-

    Stoma Reversal

I hope you will find some reassurance from people who have been through the reversal process, and hope your mum copes well.

  • Sorry  my link takes you back to this main group. If you look at the top of the group there is a sub group called “ Living well with a stoma reversal or LARS”. That would be a good place to aske any questions or look for advice.

  • Hi. I’m reversed.

I had my Ileostomy for thirteen months and decided to go for a reversal however I managed really well with it as it didn’t stop me from doing anything

If you click on my name you can read my back story.
However if you put up a fresh post like Sarah says it can be a resource for any questions you have

    Best wishes

  • thanks ,my mother is 77 and last year she had chemo for a enlarged lymphnode and did  the chemo it weaken her bowels and she ended up having divertilotis blocked ,emergency surg and she woke up with 2 bags which can be reversed ,but the hospital neglected her bags and it leaked to her incision and almosted died heart failure and sespic, grant it she was weak and sick from the chemo before surgery and not eating  but was cancer free  she was in ICU and hospital about a month then in rehab center about 1 month and 1/2 was there to help walk but they negleted her there but i was there to catch the sepsis before it got out of control ,Now months later she wants to reverse , she is heatlhy and strong  ,im so afraid this will start all over again or even death ,the surgeon is supposely the best ,and told us it was her choice but it is a very major surgry and he has operated on worst , l changed her wafers since its really liquidy she cant but she dumps bags which is great ,she feels bad that l have to do her wafers she feels its  taken my life away from having to do  her wafers  but her life is more important , her surgry is this May 1st and lm so streessed l dont want her to do

  • Hi there. I’m sorry you’re so anxious about your mums pending operation

I think it may help to know exactly what operation your Mum is booked in for as she has had a terrible time so far with complications and sepsis I can fully understand why you are feeling negative about it

You say she has two bags may I ask what type she has ?

I had an Ileostomy and the operation was very simple they fitted me in at the end of the day

In and out in two hours. I was discharged the next day

It was bowel control that was a challenge and I think that’s common for most reversals

Like Sarah says there’s brilliant support here under LARS

From what you say your mothers sounds more complicated

    Take care

  • she has a loop colostomy (was twisted) and a mucous fisula (had a blocked and absess, which they hoped to clear up with antibotics which it did work to a degree but had to have emergency surgry for the blockaged) to be reversed ,hers was cause from divertilotis, maybe weaken from chemo ,she had six inches of bowel taken out , Her incision seemed to be  healing properly until the feces started going into the incision due to neglect of the nurses not wanting to empty her bags and it being so close to the incision where the wafer laid bascilly untop of the incision, Since then it took months for the incision down her belly to heal ;  ,She never had bowels issue before  ,just a mild case of divertilotis from years ago We are just afraid that she could be worst off if she goes for reveral ,its just scary how the surgeon tells you the worst ,and says you have a month to think about and that hes done people worst ,he never said he wouldnt do ,but never would say he didnt recommend

  • She’s been through a lot

    You said two bags?

I had a loop Ileostomy and it was straight forward however I was checked before hand as there was a suspected vaginal fistula which would have made a decision harder to make

I do think that surgeons have to say the worst outlook. I’ve had a shock a couple of times when being told the ifs buts and maybes.

    What are the risks?

With a stoma reversal she will have a wound which will take a time to heal  mine was open after the staples were removed but it was fine I think it was two weeks and I had I packed  is that your concern?

It may be a good idea to start a new post for others to join. There’s a lot of members that will have good advice.
    best wishes
