hi all. I’ve popped over from the bowel cancer group. Read my story if you’d like to know my history and why we are sadly part of the Macmillan group.

just a question on foods that should be avoided really. My boyfriend has a stoma, which he had in place last October, due to be reversed possibly April time. The thing is google has a lot of out of date information with regards to food. I’d like to know what he really shouldn’t eat.

His output is never the same day to day. Some days it might be runny and not much of it, other days it will be a porridge consistency. Some days the bag is just full of air. At the moment, the last few days it’s been runny and not much of it. It’s very dark as is on iron tablets. He tries to eat normally, this includes apples with the skin on occasionally, he’s not a fan of fruit, he’ll eat normal veg, sometimes spicy foods, etc, all these say to avoid on the internet, oh and occasionally a handful of peanuts. Should he avoid sweet corn? Mushrooms? Onions? Celery? Apple skin? Peanuts? Spicy food? Curtain bread? Etc

thanks x

Good morning thanks for popping into the group and I hope I can help.

Please try not to Google too much as the information can be misleading or out of date.

In theory your boyfriend should be able to eat most foods although some foods will alter the output or cause wind.

Foods with skins should have the skins removed before eating. Foods that cannot be broken down by chewing mushrooms, pineapples, corn, onions and peanuts should be avoided as they cause blockages which he doesn't want. Spicey food it's an individual thing if he can eat them no problem have a small portion to try first.

Remember having a stoma is not one size fits all, we are all different. Something that disagrees with him today maybe okay next week, everything is trial and error.

    ADVICE

Please down load and see the food charts on pages 13 and 14. (Click on the green text to be taken to a new page)

No matter what food is eaten the golden rule is it should be

CHEWED CHEWED CHEWED CHEWED CHEWED CHEWED CHEWED CHEWED

and just before swallowing he should have a few more CHEWS to make sure the food is completely broken down.

I hope the above will help and your boyfriend will find foods that he can enjoy without problem.

Let me know if I can be of any more help just ask that's what I'm here for.

Hope the reversal goes to plan, we'll be here to help him through it as well.

Hi Ian. Thankyou. Just had a look at the advise, very helpful. Like you say everyone is different and will tolerate some foods while others won’t. We have a friend that my boyfriend plays football with who too had a stoma in the past, he saw my boyfriend chewing on a full apple and he couldn’t believe he was eating the skin and all, apparently he used to have to purée his apple. But he seems to be ok with them. He’s eaten a lot of things he probably shouldn’t but so far so good. Maybe it depends how much Howell you’ve had removed. He just had the sigmoid removed so quite a lot of bowel remains.

    Thanks again x

  • Hi,

I saw this on the NHS website regarding Stomas.

    Foods to avoid:

"Avoid eating foods known to cause blockages, such as corn, celery, popcorn, nuts, coleslaw, coconut macaroons, grapefruit, dried fruit, potato skins, apple skins, orange pith, and Chinese vegetables like bamboo shoots and water chestnuts".

    Kind regards,

    Lisa

Try the following .eat warburtons crumpets the do help firm poo,I was a member of the colostomy association club and I passed this tip onto the members and lots reported improvement in consistency.

When you have watery poo leaks do happen my best solution ever was stomo seal rings from Dansac they solved my problem and have been using them for ten years only had two small leaks in all that time.

I have today joined this group and have had my stoma for 30 years and I know all the problems new ostomates will have, very happy to help them in some way

    Kind Regards
