I had my stoma formation in June this year and have managed really well without any major problems. However, since the onset of colder weather and wearing tights the skin immediately around my stoma has become very sore, and broken in places. I know exactly what is happening, the tights are dragging on the bag and the skin is getting irritated. I have the same problem with winter leggings. I have experimented with larger tights, lowering the waist band to below the stoma (very uncomfortable) but haven't found a solution.
If anyone else has this problem I would much appreciate knowing if there is a way to get round this.
Thank you.
Irene
Hello BlueBlue
The only time I can really wear a dress is in the winter with tights as my bare legs don't bear close scrutiny! But if the belt doesn't work I shall certainly try support pants over the tights. At the moment I wear bikini pants which sit below the stoma and they don't irritate at all, so maybe the extra layer will help.
I'll be back! x
Sorry Irene, I didn’t notice your reply before I made my last response. I tried a support belt in the early days but didn’t like it-however I could see it might be helpful in your situation so give it a whirl when it arrives and see how you get on. What about furry lined leggings so you don’t need tights??

My bags are from Welland - I wear drainable at night (after waking on a few occasions with my bag filled with wind like a barrage balloon!) and in the morning after I have 'been' I will change to a sealed pouch. I wore leggings without tights in the summer without problems, but I can't imagine trying that when it has been so cold - might have to grit my teeth!

Hi Irene75359
I hope that the belt makes a difference. I haven't tried one myself but I know that I definitely don't have the "drag" when I have support wear on, but I do occasionally feel it without, and i suspect that pants are comfier. The other thing I'd suggest and you might well be doing this already, is don't let the pouch get too full, not more than a quarter to a half (if you have an.ileostomy that is)
It's a bit of trial and error and a learning curve but you'll get there.
X
I will have to try it - I have several pairs of Marks and Spencer high-waisted thermal leggings that look like jeans and love them but that was pre-stoma.
Lots of helpful suggestions!

Hope this video could help you too.
I am using the same bags as him.
Take care and hope you have a good weekend.

Ah, I haven’t had a wind problem to that extent, but in the months immediately following surgery I did use a drainable bag. When things were settled I went to closed bags and found them easier to manage, especially since I’ve got the urostomy to cope with too. Draining one bag is enough for me! Come back and let us know how the belt works out for you.

Hi.
I feel for you.
I had a similar issue with sore skin around the stoma to the point it was very sore.
I used flat pouches
The stoma nurses swapped me to convex with a belt and it was a game changer.
strangely later I wanted to go back to the flat pouches and instantly my skin flared up
I also went up two sizes and high waisted knickers were perfect. Wild Blooms M & S are silky too which feel comfy
Big knickers and high waited leggings may help
Good luck with your experimenting
Oh have you tried the thermal legging they’re fur lined
Now they’ll be toasty

You have already had lots of great ideas.
I use a convex bag then cotton briefs.finished with high waisted sloggi pants.keeps everything nice and flat and secure.on the few occasions I wear tights I wear the sloggis over them.again keeps things secure without too much bulk.
I hope you find a solution.it is certainly a case of trial and error
