Have you develeoped Lymphoedema after surgery?

Hi. I have been diagnosed with lymphoedema (in both legs). This makes mobility restricted and painful. I had surgery to remove tumour in late 2024, and received a stoma. For 6 months I felt I was recovering. For the last year I have felt I was 'going downhill' and getting worse again. I was recently diagnosed with lymphoedmea and I have compression garments plus exercises from physio of local hospital.

I work full time, and contracted to be in the office 2 days per week. At present my employer has agreed I can work from home full time. However I am told that this cannot last forever, and that expectation is that I return to office 2 days per week. If I cannot do that I am told that would be unworkable and would have to find another job.
Has anyone else faced this with an employer and could you suggest where I could get clarity on my rights? I fear that commuting 2 days a week would be too much, along with the set up at work where I would not be able to elevate my legs, have to negotiate Staircases etc.
Thanks, Philip
  • Hi  (Philip)

I’m sorry to read about the current difficulties you are facing, and the impact that this lymphoedema is having on your life. It sounds extremely debilitating.

I had major surgery, and live with 2 permanent stomas, but have been fortunate not to develop any lymphoedema. I can no longer work, and am retired now so haven’t faced the issues you have.

I’d recommend you call our support line-the number is in my signature- and ask to speak to an advisor who is specialised in work related matters to get accurate advice going forward.
