I had my stoma formation in June this year and have managed really well without any major problems. However, since the onset of colder weather and wearing tights the skin immediately around my stoma has become very sore, and broken in places. I know exactly what is happening, the tights are dragging on the bag and the skin is getting irritated. I have the same problem with winter leggings. I have experimented with larger tights, lowering the waist band to below the stoma (very uncomfortable) but haven't found a solution.
If anyone else has this problem I would much appreciate knowing if there is a way to get round this.
Thank you.
Irene
Hi Irene - I know exactly what you are having to deal with. I had a ILEOSTOMY 6 months ago and lost over 2 stone in weight - I like to wear leggings, jeggings most of the time - anyway, I have found that you need to wear something with a wide waistband not too much elastic ok - preferably a size larger than you would normally wear, because the higher up it is, the less pressure will be on your bag - always worse when sitting down! I was told that I would lead a normal life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope this helps you

Hi Irene75359
You have done really well since your surgery so it’s a shame there is this issue giving you bother. I don’t wear tights, but I live in leggings! I haven’t had the same issue with the skin I have to say…the actual skin round your stoma is getting irritated under the bag? My go to for sore skin is a wipe around with calomine lotion and dry with hairdryer on a cool setting, but that doesn’t get to the root cause of why it’s happening.
Have you tried an other kinds of bags to see if that helps at all? Maybe some of the other tights wearing members might have some useful advice for you Irene-I do hope so. I hate my skin being irritated myself.

Maybe you have a problem with adhesive on your bag, if so try CAVILON - ask your STOMA nurses - it works for me, as I also had really uncomfortable skin issues too - I am currently using a Novalife 1 Soft Convex Ileostomy bag midi, before that it was a SenSura Mio - had to change due to leakage etc.
Hope this helps.

Hi Irene75359
Lots of good advice from others on here but can I just add another suggestion in case it helps? Have you tried some good support pants rather than just normal underwear? They really help to hold the pouch much closer to your body. I don't wear tights as I'm always in trousers but on the very odd (and it is very odd) occasion that a dress is needed, I put support wear on over the tights - keeps them up and holds everything else secure (including the belly ).
Hope you find a solution as you've managed so well.up to now.

That is what I am doing - big tights, high-waisted leggings but because I am hourglass shape they still slip down and start to pull on the bag. I feel the cold enormously and really don't relish wearing hold-ups, I am too much of a wuss to have gaps where I can get cold! x
Oh hugs Irene - let's wait and see if someone else on here comes up with an idea to help - we sure do need it!
Take care

Hello Sarah!
I live in tights under leggings in the winter hence my comment above about feeling the cold if I tried hold-ups. Yes, it is a very small ring of skin directly adjacent to the stoma, plus the stoma has started to gape a tiny amount from surrounding flesh. Coincidently I had to place an order for stoma supplies today and I asked the person her advice. She is going to send a stoma belt to see if that helps, so I will return and let you know. I haven't had any problems with the bags I use until now but like you I live in leggings and I really would like to sort this out.
Do hope you are well!

Hello fatz - a belt is coming from the stoma supply company so I will let you know it it is any good! Irene x
I feel the cold too Irene! What kind of bag do you use for your colostomy? I changed to a very small type of bag-the Salts Confidence Be and it is very neat. I also wear high waisted leggings but have no pulling-maybe because I don’t wear tights underneath them.
Have you tried going without the tights?? Or thicker tights? Support underwear might be a good idea for you-I’ve never worn them as I just use normal underwear, but they might be helpful as BlueBlue has suggested.
