Stoma bags

I had a colostomy 3 weeks ago and I've only got the bags with the harder, raised rim, do I use them the same way? I'm bleeding slightly on the outside of the Stoma and I'm terrified of making it worse! Normally I'd phone someone but, being Saturday evening, I don't think anyone will be working!

Thank you, Three

  • You're so welcome Moira. I'm sure your stoma nurse will be able to help you tomorrow. They're probably used  to people getting into pickles like this and they do a fabulous job in looking after us.

  • Hi Aldan,

I finally got my bags sorted, the stoma nurse wants me to try some new bags and she's arranging an emergency pack!

This is a bit rushed, sorry, I got a phone call yesterday, saying my results from PET and CT staging scan are in and the consultant wants to discuss them with me today! I'm terrified of what he's going to tell me, plus it's snowed all night, will I even get there?

Right, as I've said to Karen, also on here and lovely, time to put my big girl pants on!

    Speak soon, love Moira x

  • It might be worth while getting your sensible knickers on it stops the draft You will find out that it's trial and error with the different types of bags .I have a hernia as well so it's like tryingThumbsupn shoes .I have flange strips that give me a a bit of security .Remember that you are the one that's going to wear the bag .Take care . • Hi Moira. Glad to see you got your pouches sorted. Hope your results are good if you got there in the snow. We didn't have a lot of snow here in Darlington. Needed my boots on for work though. I had a phone appointment with my colorectal nurse today. She said my bloods were spot on at my last checkup and I am currently cancer free.

  • That's wonderful news Kim, so happy for you!

Yes, I got to the hospital, on time too although the snow was terrible! The doctor says I have a very rare form of anal cancer, the whole country has less than 10 cases in a year and the average GP probably won't see a case in a 40 year career! It's got a success rate of 75% with aggressive radiology and chemo and that I'm going to hate him at the end of 5 weeks! He terrified me but also reassured me! Crazy though it sounds I'm pretty upbeat! The treatment should start next week or the week after, so bring it on!

Thanks for being there Kim, you, Aldan and Karen have been so supportive!

  • Hi Moira.

The waiting is the scary part. I had 5 weeks of radiotherapy alongside chemotherapy (Capecitabine). It all went over really quickly and with no major side effects. I had mine before my surgery, followed by 8 cycles of Capecitabine after surgery. Keep us all updated.

  • Hi Alaine. Great to hear you will have your stoma reversal and that you are cancer free . My stoma is permanent. It really doesn't bother me at all though because as my colorectal nurse said, it saved my life.
