Hi , I’m new to this site but wanted to share my experience of living with oesophageal cancer. I realise that I’m one of the lucky ones in that my cancer was caught relatively early and was therefore operable.
I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in February 2007 and after many tests and two sessions of chemotherapy I underwent an Ivor Lewis operation, which is major surgery to remove the cancer, and lasted around seven hours. I responded well throughout and remained only five days in intensive care before being moved to a general ward and released a week later.
Since then, I’ve continued to do well but suffer from dumping syndrome as a result of the surgery. This is an unpleasant side-effect that causes fatigue, sweating and nausea after eating. Also, I now have to have vitamin B12 injections every three months as my body can no longer process this essential vitamin.
All in all, I feel ok and have remained positive all the way through. I realise I’m extremely lucky and count my blessings every day.
I’ve read so many negative reports about this type of cancer so I felt I had to share something positive for those of you who have, or know someone with, Oesophageal cancer.
All the best
Crystal
Hi Leisha
And I will second all of that! This is such good news for you both. Keep popping in to the Carers and Caring thread. I am watching and thinking of you all, although not posting much.
Lots of love to you, to Crystal, and all those looking in.

Hi Leisha
Just want to say how pleased I am over ed's results, you both deserve a breather.

Thankyou for your kind words, I would never have made it this far without you all and I pray we all continue to keep our friendships going. To anyone looking in I wish you all the best and just post if you need some support, love leisha xxxxxxx
Its very quiet on here so I hope everyone is ok. June is a bit of a washout round here so far but surely it can only get better. England was another let down in the football. Anyone got any good news? We just went to 3 year old grandaughters birthday and played "drunken roulette" when kids all gone. Funny i dont even feel sleepy but wide awake and ready to rock n roll ! Ed gone asleep but we had a good time. Does us good to let our hair down now and then. Forgot how to laugh so much !!!! I send you all my best wishes, love leisha xxxx
Hi Leisha
I also noticed it's very quite on the 'site'...hope that means people are happy. English football match was dreadful but my husband is German so very happy tonight after 4 - 0 win over Australia. We had a crown od friends round (no-one else German) and hubby really enjoyed himself. Everyone had to pretend they were happy too! N. Korean match should be interesting!!! Have to give into the whole thing otherwise will be left behind.
Healthwise things aren't too bad and we hope to have last chemo this week and markers for cyberknife put in (after an abortive attampt last week). Hope you and your husband are ok. Checked for update on your profile, but it's a little out of date, as is mine!
Hugs to everyone, Sue x
Hi Leisha and Sue
I often think of all those that have posted here, particularly our friends from down under in NZ and Australia, Ben and Lou. If you’re looking in we’d like to hear from you. Also, everyone else, it would be good to hear from you, but I understand that it’s also necessary to get on with our lives, which is as it should be.
Leisha, you are always in my thoughts because you are such a giant force behind your man and yet always so helpful to others, whilst still keeping a wonderful sense of humour. I send you great big hugs ((((((((((Leisha))))))) and hope that Ed continues to do really well. Have you got an outfit for that wedding yet?
Sue, I hope all is going well with your husband and that the CyberKnife treatment will be sorted out very soon. You too have fought so hard for various treatments and it shouldn't have to be like that should it? It must have been devastating to have the CyberKnife delayed, so hopefully things will resolve soon.
As for myself, I don’t look into the Mac site quite so often now, although I do have bursts of activity for a day or so. I do still have fatigue, so any energy I have is used in other ways. Like you, we’ve been waving England’s flag and were disappointed with the result, but there’s always the next game. Also, the Canadian Grand Prix was brilliant for the McLaren team. Otherwise, as you say Leisha, I’m still rocking Lol.
Love to All looking in.
Keep Rockin’
Crystal xx

does anyone else have these problems.?????
Hi Liz
Great to see you, and I hope all is going really well for you. Thanks for the insurance recommendation, it’s always useful to have that info, as it’s such a headache trawling round trying to find a fair price. You must come back and tell us about your holiday! I hope you’re going from strength to strength.
Take good care.
Crystal
Hi Cally
How great to see you again after such a long time. We used to chat in the old forum ‘What Now’ didn’t we and I never forgot about you.
I’m sorry that your husband has this bad cough and if it’s a continuous thing he needs to get it checked out by his doctor. The acid reflux is deeply noxious and painful and is one of the worst things I ever experienced, as many who’ve suffered with this will tell you. It causes coughing and choking, burns everything it touches and causes sickness and a lot of pain. Some foods can worsen the condition, so it’s important to reassess the diet. With me it’s chocolate, and dairy products. The solution, which helps quite a lot, is Zantac, which Steve (Badyear now a Goodyear) suggested to me and it’s so effective I hardly ever get reflux now. Also, your husband should always sleep in an upright position with loads of pillows and especially a V shaped pillow. I have a reclining bed and always sleep sitting up, which I’ve become used to.
To soothe the reflux once it’s occurred, the very best thing to do to ease the pain and neutralise the acid is to suck ice cubes and then eat mints and take a painkiller such as co-codomol.
I hope you’re well Cally and that this helps your husband with that really nasty acid.
All the very best
Crystal
