Hi, My name is Bob and I live in Cambridgeshire. I am married with an 8 yr old daughter and three older step sons. Up untill the end of last year everything was tickety boo having recently moved to a new house which we love. Work was busy but enjoyable. I am Manager of an electrical companys maintenance department and my Wife, Linda was enjoying her job as a Nurse. The three boys are buying there own house nearby and all work locally.
In November I went to my Doctors with a small "cyst" on my chest. After a couple of referals and many Xrays, pet scans, bone scans and CT scans I was told the news everybody dreads. My lump on the chest was a secondary cancer of which the primary was in my left Kidney. I was fast tracked to the Royal Brompton, under the expert care of Mr Laddas who informed a long and complicated operation would need to be carried out to remove the bone tumor and surrounding bone which involved two ribs,my collar bone and chest bone. I did not have time to panic, the operation was carried out the next day over 10 hrs. After nearly two weeks in the Brompton I am recovering well from this op but I have since been told that the Cancer is in both kidneys as well as small mets in both lungs. It seems at the moment further ops are out the question and i have been put on the drug Sutent. I am one week into this and so far so good. I do not know what the future holds but I have to remain positive.

    Hi Bob!
I hope you don't mind me dropping in, but I couldn't let the day go by without wishing you Happy Birthday, and I am so pleased to hear that you have had a lovely day surrounded with your loving family.
We haven't spoken before, but I have been following your thread and I think you are absolutely amazing, and I wish you all the luck and strength in the world as you bravely fight your illness.
(I sadly lost my 48 year old brother to pancreatic cancer in July this year, and I miss him dreadfully, but this site has and still is a great comfort to me)
You are such an inspiration Bob, you really are.
    Take Care!
    Love Shirley x

    Thanks Shirley

Im am so sorry about your brother. I am also so glad this site is still such a help to you amd thank you for reading my diary. Whats so good about this site for me is that I can write down exactly how I am feeling each day. I can compare to how other people are feeling, By reading threads such as yours where you have lost a loved one I can try to help my family to prepare and deal with my impending doom and if it helps others in some way to deal with their situation that can only be good. Also it allows me to leave a record for my family, showing them how much I love them and how much I am fighting to stay with them for as long as possible.

Another good day today. After a much better nights sleep I awoke and although it took me a while managed to fix three curtain rails so that our lounge looks a bit tidier ready for our coffee morning (well all day actually) tomorrow. Matt came over and we sorted out junk from the garage and he done a tip run before treating Linda, Kate and myself to a takaway tea. Kate, bless her made a cake ready for tomorrow and she was so proud of the finished result. We are certainly very proud of her and I am sure it will be a winner tomorrow. Linda has been working hard all day preparing the raffle and all the other bits and we hope we raise a decent amount . We have had some lovely prizes donated including a pair of ear rings and necklace made by my niece Jenny. Cakes have been comming in from all directions and I only hope that if I can't sleep tonight the cakes escape untouched. I dont know about the rest of you but we have found since being diagnosed we have become a lot more impulsive, live for today and sod tomorrow, you know what I mean. Well tonight a chap knocked on our door selling paintings and where as normally I probably would not even look at them, we took the time to brouse through them and ended up buying two of them!! They really are very good and look fantastic in our half decorated lounge. Linda took another call tonight from cancer research regarding Kates fundraising for "race for life" and gave their press officer an insight into our lives at the moment. It seems they wish to run an artical and my hope is if the local press get hold of it it will boost the publicity surrounding the debate of postcode lottery drugs. I will certainly be using this oppertunity to fight everyones corner in the fight for drugs for all.

After an exellent nights sleep we awoke this morning eager and ready to start our coffee morning. I took Kate to school while Linda was making a last minute decision cake. I left the house to radio two gently playing in the background and returned to "oh blast it" as I returned through the door. The sponge linda and Kate had made turned out great but the rather runny butter cream was pouring out the side of the cake. Never mind we put the offending cake in the fridge and the filling toned up a treat. Then we decided to get the old perculator going and just as our first guests arrived, the perculator decided to spew coffee out all over the worktop. With no time to sort out a replacement we struggled on with it and managed to produce enough coffee for the entire day. We were overwhelmed by peoples generousity and we were handed loads of raffle prizes and cakes. People also spent very generousely and we managed to raise the grand sum of £450.00. We were well chuffed with that and we are sure macmillan will also be delighted. One of our friends only gave birth to her daughter Phoebe yesterday morning at 3 am and she still came today to support us. I held the new arrival and she is gorgeous and bought tears to my eyes. We have just finished counting monies and sorting raffle prizes ready to be drawn tomorrow. I would like to dedicate this post to all our friends and family for making today such a success.

Bob, What a great inspiration you and your family are! Now I know why I can't tear myself away from this site. I'd like to join the others to thank you for sharing your story, I'll always remember your generosity.
There was a programme on 'Dom's (can't remember full title)..' on ITV Wednesday this week on Sutent, it was really excellent and I hope it raised the profile of the campaign. I was appalled that due to 'cost effectiveness' NICE have even recommended that it is not prescribed on the NHS - totally disgusting. I am so glad that you have been able to have it, I can't think of anyone who deserves it more - not that any life should have to be lotteried.
I adored the pics, made my day.
Lots of love to you, Linda and Katie

    Hi FI

Glad you like the pictures, so do I.

After yesterdays eventfull day, (by the way our total has now gone up to £470.00 due to some more donations), we have had an easier day today. Kate and myself spent a bit of time out in the garden planting some spring bulbs while Linda did all the usual clearing up after me and Kate jobs. We have had no visitors and apart from the delivery chaps delivering the new sofas. We did pop out to pick up some new cushions and then have spent the rest of the day trying them out. Kate has only just settled down and she is so tired as she had a friend round to sleep last night. last night I made some honeycombe with the girls and we have all been chomping on it all day. My appertite is not good again at the moment so I just snack on anything I fancy when I fancy it. Tomorrow we are off to Kate and Tommys for lunch. its so good the weather has improved for a bit . You cant beat a bit of sunshine to cheer yourself up and to make you feel good. I hope you weekends are going ok

I now nearly have my own website up and running although not complete yet. I am dedicating this site to Linda, Kate, the boys and the rest of my family to show them how much I love them and how hard I am trying to stay with them for as long as possible and also, once I have gone, to show them that I did not want to leave them. This will be an ongoing personal momentoe which will be updated regularly and more photos will be added. The picture below is taken from it and shows Kate enjoying a well deserved ice cream after she had just finished the race for life. Also with her are her big brothers Matthew, Tom and Justin. Now you can see why I am so, so proud of my kids. Once complete I will put details on thread.
