Hi, My name is Bob and I live in Cambridgeshire. I am married with an 8 yr old daughter and three older step sons. Up untill the end of last year everything was tickety boo having recently moved to a new house which we love. Work was busy but enjoyable. I am Manager of an electrical companys maintenance department and my Wife, Linda was enjoying her job as a Nurse. The three boys are buying there own house nearby and all work locally.
In November I went to my Doctors with a small "cyst" on my chest. After a couple of referals and many Xrays, pet scans, bone scans and CT scans I was told the news everybody dreads. My lump on the chest was a secondary cancer of which the primary was in my left Kidney. I was fast tracked to the Royal Brompton, under the expert care of Mr Laddas who informed a long and complicated operation would need to be carried out to remove the bone tumor and surrounding bone which involved two ribs,my collar bone and chest bone. I did not have time to panic, the operation was carried out the next day over 10 hrs. After nearly two weeks in the Brompton I am recovering well from this op but I have since been told that the Cancer is in both kidneys as well as small mets in both lungs. It seems at the moment further ops are out the question and i have been put on the drug Sutent. I am one week into this and so far so good. I do not know what the future holds but I have to remain positive.

Yesterday we had a brilliant day. Kate woke us up nice and early (5.50) and although the day was wet, it did not stop us having a great birthday party for her. We set up a gazebo in the garden and a barbie in the garage. Nine of Kates friends came round and had a beading party organised by my sister Julie and neice Jenny. After this the kids sang on Kates new kareoke machine ( that is once they could get the adults off it. Then during the afternoon and evening around 30 adults popped in for a drink and chat plus food off the barbie. This was mine and Linda's way of saying thank you to so many people who have helped us through the past difficult few months. I tried out my new gas barbie and it worked great. Tom and Katie did us proud with all the food they organised and cooked.
Today I feel understandably tired but very satisfied. I had a bit of a rough night but this morning I dosed myself up with painkillers and at this moment dont feel too bad.

Hi Bob And Andy and All, Im back home after travelling all around Cornwall, Devon and Dorset and many other places along the way. We have had a really good time and thankfully the weather has been kind to us. Weve been to loads of places i wanted to see, like Lands End, Stonehenge, Monkey World and the Eden project. I managed to get round most places with my walking stick but poor Jon had to push me in a wheel chair around the Eden project so hes found muscles he dident know he had. I myself felt ok most of the time but there was a lot of places we couldent get to, either because the beach was a the bottom of a cliff, (i can walk down but not uphill )or the beach was'ent dog friendly or the car park had a 6ft barrier so we couldent get the motorhome through, but it was still so nice to see this beautiful country of ours, oh and we had to have the cream teas or should i say a couple and real Cornish pasties at Lands End that cost £2.25 each, they were lovely but expensive. We also went to Glastonbury on my Daughters request as she goes every year and she wanted me to go to the healing park but because it was hilly i dident go, we did see a man out of his head dancing round a pole though I So Rock Still he seemed to be enjoying himself. We arrived home last Thursday night so we have been busy with the washing and getting this house in order again, but i've not been to good as i've had a bad dose of hayfever which is just about clearing up now. I've got the hospital on thursday 11am for my second 3 monthly scan since ive been on Sutent and also my out patient appointment at 1.25pm so im hoping to find out the results then, fingers and toes crossed eh.I think ive had one of the best months this last month, maybe its cos we were away?
Well how are you two? Ive just been reading your posts and you both seem to be coping well, GOOD LUCK to you Andy for your scan, it can be a worrying and stressful time, i'm trying not to worry as what will be will be, ill keep my fingers crossed for you anyway. Wish Kate a belated Happy Birthday from me also Bob. XX Ive been trying to see how to post photographs but i dont seem to be able to? im sure ive seen someone do it in the past, if you want to see a holiday pic the only way is for you to send me your email addresses.Well thats about all for now i think ive covered everything, oh ive Just remembered we nearly dident go as on the journey down we stoped to let the dogs have a tickle and Mia had got bad diarea from Tasher, so we stayed the night in Tewkesbury and the following day Jon went to the local vet who gave him some medication, she said it sounded like they had Pipe bowel, they were ok 3-4 days later, but we had a lot of cleaning to do every time they had been out before they came back in the van it was bottom cleaning time UGGG.I hope this finds you both as well as can be exspected and coping with life.
Looking forwards to hearing from you, Regards Fay.

hi, good to see you had such a lovely time for kate birthday, sounds a blast with all the freinds and family there. good on u with gas barbie!! ant started another round of sutent last friday. he good at momant, however i was worried about his hair, it went grey last oct due to his meds and he had it dyed a few weeks ago then last week, we thought it was thinning in parts. lots more hair coming out, and noticable balding patch at back of head. i was worried it was coming out as was ant himself. today tho i see the new hair is grey once more. has anyone experinced thinning due to sutent?

hi fay, sounds like a very action packed holiday and lots of sight seeing. i have never been to that part of the country before, have often been to kent tho, which is other side , but far from home. we are in scottish borders so lots of rolling hills here. i went out walking with hubby today and we discussed hols. we would like to take the boys up west of scotland as we have not been for years. not since ant was 4yrs old.we are also doing a sponser walk over forth road bridge for edinburgh sick kids, so hence the walking. i never walk and scared of heights so big achievemnet for me to go over. my 2 youngest are going over with me. i think pulling and pushing me over more like.

    any how off to bed

    luv ros x

    Hi Ros,
I have had the same problem with my hair, its gone very thin and white including my eyelashes and eyebrows, but i have noticed re-growth near my fore head so maybe it may grow thicker after the initial shock of Sutant.
Good luck on your on your sponcered walk, i too dont like heights, infact on our last trip we went over the river Thames on the Queen Elizabeth bridge and ive never been so scared as its really high and sort of goes to a point in the middle, uugg never again, so avoid that if your ever down that way. We were suppose to be going to Scotland for our last trip but because of the petrol strike we went to the south instead but we are planning a trip in July, but im gonna have to check when the midges are out as i seem to attract them.
Ill let you know how my scan goes when i find out, finger crossed eh!!!!
    Speak soon, love Fay.X

    Hi Ros

Im not sure that my hair has thinned but like Fay my eyebrows have gone almost transparent white looking. All stubble is also white but head hair still brown.

Hi Fay Im glad your break was good and certainly sounds action packed. I have found myself slowing down a bit over the last few days but its not supprising considering how busy I have been. Also I am comming up to my normal worst period regarding Sutent and all things considered im doing ok. Walking is a real effort at the moment, my eyelids are well swollen and my appertite and digestion are all over the place (all side effects)

A guy who i know who has been on Sutent about a year has just had another scan and found tumors have shrunk even further. Us Sutent users are very lucky to be getting this drug and to me all the side effects are well worth it.

I hope you all enjoy the half term break and please keepm in touch

    Hi Bob,
Imk glad to hear you are doing ok and i hope you get through your worse bit more comfortably.Im like you my best times are the last week off and the first week on, but i totally agree the side effects are well worth it it we get results.
I went for my second scan today and then my out patients appointment, the scan went ok but i wont find out the results untill next week. After i had my usual blood test it showed up me being aneimic so i have to go in for the day on Monday and have a blood transfusion, they said it will take about 6 hrs but i will feel better for it, apparantly the tablets im on can cause it, im just hoping it not something more sinister as it was through being aneimic i was first diagnosed with cancer.I will let you know.
I was thinking yesterday it may be a good idea if we let each other know what tablets were on and for what reason, as there maybe something im on that will help you and like wise, what do you think.
Right its 11.30pm and its been a long day so im off to bed. Take care, Fay.

    Hi Bob,
I totally agree with you about feeling very lucky to be on Sutant as there are so many that cant get it. When we were down south there was a lady called Kate Spall on the TV who lost her mother to cancer who couldent get Sutant so she is now acting as a mediator for people who cant get it and apparently with some success, so if there is anyone out there in that possition contact Kate Spall and im sur she will help, one day with enough pressure everyone should be able to get it and have a chance of a longer life. Best wishes Fay.
