Hi, My name is Bob and I live in Cambridgeshire. I am married with an 8 yr old daughter and three older step sons. Up untill the end of last year everything was tickety boo having recently moved to a new house which we love. Work was busy but enjoyable. I am Manager of an electrical companys maintenance department and my Wife, Linda was enjoying her job as a Nurse. The three boys are buying there own house nearby and all work locally.
In November I went to my Doctors with a small "cyst" on my chest. After a couple of referals and many Xrays, pet scans, bone scans and CT scans I was told the news everybody dreads. My lump on the chest was a secondary cancer of which the primary was in my left Kidney. I was fast tracked to the Royal Brompton, under the expert care of Mr Laddas who informed a long and complicated operation would need to be carried out to remove the bone tumor and surrounding bone which involved two ribs,my collar bone and chest bone. I did not have time to panic, the operation was carried out the next day over 10 hrs. After nearly two weeks in the Brompton I am recovering well from this op but I have since been told that the Cancer is in both kidneys as well as small mets in both lungs. It seems at the moment further ops are out the question and i have been put on the drug Sutent. I am one week into this and so far so good. I do not know what the future holds but I have to remain positive.

We had a great time and so did Kate. We picked her up from the school all smiles and she has been telling us about her hectic but enjoyable week. Poor Linda has now taken her for a dress rehearsal for a ballet show she is doing tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. Kate will be so tired, and then she is doing the "race for life" on Sunday. Im sure they will both sleep well tonight. I am working my way through kates and our washing so at least I feel as im contributing something to the work load.

  • Washer'man' Bob, then, lol! Glad Kate enjoyed her time, they will both be shattered tonight!

love and hugs to you all

Here I am at four inthe morning. Linda obviously did far too good a job looking after me whilst I was away and im totally wide awake.  Linda and Kate are deep in slumber so im keeping downstairs out of the way.  Looking back on this week we have had a brilliant time, all of us. It was great for Kate to feel able to leave us and enjoy her school trip so much. It means such a lot that she had a "normal" week in her life. It was also great for myself and Linda to spend good quality time together and actually have time to enjoy each others company.  Our lives have changed so, so much since the cancer diagnosis, looking back it seems unreal just how much things have changed. You almost take it for granted until you miss the people that are no longer here because of Cancer and then you realise just how lucky you are. At times I get fed up, feel a bit sorry for myself, and generally feel a tad down but not usually for long. I know im at that stage of treatment where things could change for the worse quickly. I do not allow myself to dwell on that though and keep setting those goals and targets.  I wanted to be around to see Kate start secondary school and I have nearly achieved that. My next goal is to reach the grand old age of 50 at the end of September.

OK Graeme, Invite will be their in 2015, lol

Not long been back to see Kates performance at her ballet. It was an amazing performance and all the performers put on a great show. It was quite emotional at times but I found great comfort in that Kate coped so well. Now time for rest as we have "race for life" tomorrow. An early start so better try and sleep.

    Hello Bob,

You never ever cease to amaze!  I am so pleased, infact delighted, to see that you are feeling better and had a few days away with Linda too.  What a most deserved break for you both, fantastic.

Please wish little Kate and Linda all the best for today, hope the weather keeps fine for you (bit overcast up here in Ironbridge but still dry........at the moment!)  I think I sponsored Kate but let me know if I havent as I certainly will do.

Keep on keeping on, you're doing amazing............ besides, the lawn mower will go into a sulk if you dont keep him on the move!

Take care and love to Linda, Kate and the young men

    Love Wendy xxx

  • I'm thankful for you all, with the RFL, that today is a good bit fresher and not so hot and humid.......hope that you all enjoy the race and the day.....love to you all, Sir Bob, with big hugs too

Well today has been a brilliant day all round. We went in to Cambridge and met up with family and friends to mark the start of the "race for life".  After parking up, I decided to push my wheelchair and walk the distance to the start of the race. I was determined if all the people there raising money for cancer research were walking and running, I wanted to walk, and I did for all the day, probably a good mile in all. They organised things a bit different this year and the start and the finish were spread out over two areas with the actual race passing through the city centre. It was better for those taking part but did make it harder for those wishing to follow the race. All in all though it worked out well. The girls did really well on what was an emotional day at times. A few of Kates friends and mums were also doing the run and it was reading their messages on their pink cards that set me off a bit. Some lovely messages in support of me. Once the race was over we trekked back to the car, still pushing the chair, and then came home to a great bar-b-q.  Many thanks again to all of you who sponsored Kate, she has raised £615.00 and a good chunk of that was raised on this site.

Another happy piece of news today is that Tom and Katie are expecting their first child. It seems apt to mention it on the Race for Life day. We are all totally thrilled and obviously gives me another target date to reach. I look forward  to being a Gramps

  • Ahhhhh, how lovely! What a brilliant bit of wonderful news for a special day, makes it even more special, Sir Bob.....very well done to your lovely ladies!..and to you for doing the walk!
