Selfish people

Hi Papermoon,

I definitely understand your position, I had to stay up until 2am the other night to get a slot. It is adding a lot of stress to an already stressful situation. I would also add that medication deliveries are equally falling over. These are scary times that we are living in.

I do agree with you that it is insensitive of people to book online delivery slots when they are able to go out. I hope this gets a lot of press attention and people are reminded how detrimental this is to other people (ie, like the panic buying was for that nurse).

Just to add to Greg's reply you may want to try this link here as it will take you to a site to identify local groups who are helping out during this time.

You should also be able to register with your local authority as someone who needs extra help.

To add to the previous 2 replies I have also found local shops are much better at delivering within a couple of days or even the same day if you phone them up and explain your situation. I am not considered high risk but have self isolated for a week because of mild symptoms but think it's probably just a dust allergy. A week before lockdown my 81 year old aunt was rushed to hospital with a heart attack & had a stent fitted. As her next of kin I took her home & settled her in with a fridge full of meals. She has no internet & so we have been arranging food deliveries for her from the village bakery and greengrocers who are doing next day deliveries. I have persuaded her to accept meals on wheels for the duration of lockdown. I am fed up with banks etc assuming that all elderly people have access to the internet. My aunt is very with it generally & very active gardening & doing housework. She doesn't like cooking & lives on ready meals - she doesn't drive and catches the bus everywhere. There must be so many people like her who will be stuck in this crisis. There is a volunteer network set up in her village now but I phoned the parish council last week before it was set up to see if they could help. There is a national facebook group #viralkindness who are volunteering to help those self isolating. Whilst many people are very selfish there are also others willing to help. I hope that you find the support you need. 

Thank you all very much for your helpful replies. It certainly helps to hear that people are facing the same difficulties and will try out the suggestions. It really needs addressing as it's going to carry on for months and I fear that many old people who are not familiar with the Internet or don't have kind neighbours are going to miss out. 

Try setting an alarm for after midnight and check the online delivery slots - as these are often put up automatically by computer.

Also keep a regular check on delivery slots as I have found that complete days deliveries appear out of the blue....... due to staffing being available.

One of our local taxi companies are doing very cheap pickup for Click and Collect

Our area on the edge of Inverness has put a A4 sheet of paper through each door - one side has a green thumbs up to say ‘all is well’ and on the other side is a red thumbs down saying ‘can anyone help me please’

Our local butcher has started free deliveries including fruit, veg and milk.
