HI, I have just joined this community because my wife was diagnosed with Tonsil Cancer last week.
We are starting that journey through Preps, Treatment and God willing the Recovery period now.
This diagnose has made me realise I am definitely going to need help with most aspects of this journey and how best to support my wife and two group up boys.
Sadly it has made me realise that I don't have anyone else really close to me who I feel I can go to for support or advice, even though I have family.
So although it early days into this journey. I want to ask for advice on how from other families and friends on here about their experiences of helping/supporting their love ones along this journey.
Many thanks for anyone who can share their experiences. I realise it's not a black and white answer and there is probably no right or wrong way as we are all different.
Hi RichardPC
Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.
I am Steve, one of the community champions and my experience of cancer is via my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma. After two rounds of chemotherapy the doctors have managed to put the cancer to sleep and we are in the happy position of living with cancer rather than any alternative.
There have been some in our family affected by cancer before Janice but I think they found it difficult to cope with my wife's diagnosis because it brought back memories for them.
My first contact with getting support was when I walked in to our local Maggies it was amazing being able to brain dump to a complete stranger and they helped me form a plan for the next week or so.
Something I found quite helpful on here was looking at your feelings when someone has cancer as being able to recognize those feelings as part of our new normal helped to make them less overwhelming.
Do post on here whenever as someone is always listening.
<<hugs>>
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thank you much for replying and sharing your information.
I have had Maggies mentioned by a couple of people, so will be researching that soon.
I will also look at “your feelings when someone has cancer” that will be very useful as I to look at myself and my reactions to this devastating news to best know how to support my wife and my boys.
Thanks again Steve.
Richard
