A couple of months ago my Mum (59) was diagnosed with AML after being rushed into hospital. I live a few hours drive away and am not able to visit much. All of my info comes via my Dad and he’s often vague and doesn’t keep me updated much. She recently had her second round of chemo (from home) and last night he told me she had to go back into hospital for an infection. It’s so hard not knowing how things are going and not seeing her. I try so hard to not catastrophise but it’s hard not to. Any positive stories or any facts/stats that might help me not catastrophise about her getting an infection while immunocompromised would help. Thank you.
Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.
I know how difficult it can be dealing with information second hand - my dad was often less that forthcoming about both my mothers health and his own with him saying how I had my own family and life to get on with and not wanting to worry me - of course it is then easy to worry even more. Perhaps something quite helpfil can be looking at our pages on talking about cancer and how it can help everyone.
My wife's cancer is very different but during her treatment she had a number of infections - however while they resulted in hospital admission the hostpial was able to treat them with IV antibiotics. We were given a contract number direct to the oncology team and that was helpful - along with a good digital thermometer.
