Anxiety - What help is there?

Hi

My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February, and so far his treatment regime has been very rough.
We know that anything he has will only help to manage symptoms etc, not that it will cure him.

As the days/weeks go on (and after his latest 3 week hospital stint) I'm getting more and more anxious and emotional in general.
It used to just be when I was going to visit him in hospital, but now it seems more of a continual underlying feeling most days.

I was hoping someone would be able to advise on the best people to speak to regarding CBT or other forms of verbal therapy?

Any advice would be great, please and thank you!

  • Hi

A very warm welcome to our community though sorry to hear about your dad.

Something that really helped me was a living with less stress course, one element was a bit about concentrating on the here and now and that helped me in being able to recognize my feelings as valid without them seeming so overwhelming. There was a section to on conscious breathing that I found very helpful when life decided to throw us another curve ball.

One thing we have where I live is Oxfordshire talking therapies and for that people can self-refer, if you wanted to ring the helpline here they may be able to direct you to see if there is anything similar near you - 0808 808 0000 and they are open from 8am to 8pm every day.

    <<hugs>>

  • Do you have a Maggie's Centre or other cancer support charity nearby.  I understand they offer counselling and support groups. Haven't accessed yet myself but the idea is a good one. The macmillan counselling service is very good and telephone is maybe easier than trying to go to a group. I know I would find it very hard to get to a meeting regularly. Wishing you all the best.
