Hi
New to this group and just thought I’d share mums journey.
In short mum was diagnosed with OC cancer the end of November last year after having a chest infection which took it out of mum and then 3 stone weight loss in a month. Mum had a stent fitted 3 weeks later as she was struggling to keep any food down.
We where told it had then spread to her shoulder, mum thought she had just injured this moving furniture! She had a strong session fo radiotherapy to her shoulder to help with the pain and this seemed to work well.
Mum began having panic attacks around 3 weeks ago and suffered a quite bad one where she couldn’t get her breath, she was taken to A&E, where she was told she also had a chest infection. Mum also needed a blood transfusion and blood count was low. They decided to do a CT scan to make sure there wasn’t a clot on her lung and with this we where told the cancer has spread to her lung!
Since coming home a week ago mum has been so tired sleeping most of the day. We are now having to sit with her when she eats as she will fall asleep, also noticed mum is quite restless when she is asleep.
It breaks my heart seeing her like this and there’s nothing I can don’t help her. We lost Nan almost two years ago also to OC Nan passed 3 weeks after diagnosis.
Love and strength to everyone battling this terrible disease
Hi and welcome to the community though so sorry to hear about your mum and your nan.
I do recognize the feeling of there being nothing we can do - but of course just be being there and being supportive we are helping - helping to ensure she gets her nutrition is helping because without that she will need hospital care and many people with cancer hospitals are the last place they want to be.
Other things often affect people who have cancer too - so I am not surprised at all that your mum had a chest infection. I always know when my wife is really ill if she wants to go to hospital - fortunately for us that has not happened in some time.
I am sure too you will be aware that some types of cancer run in families - if this is something that might worry you it might help to speak to your GP or one of the advisors on our helpline here 0800 808 0000 it is open 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm.
Our cancer journey has been over 8 years now and one of the things I had to learn was how to look after myself - and that does really take some time - and help. Sometimes the professionals who deal with cancer ever day can overlook how big a shock the news can be.
Take care
<<hugs>>

Hi
I’m so sorry to hear of your mums diagnosis. My mom is going through diagnosis right now for bowel and liver cancer, which was discovered after she became unwell before Christmas and they thought it was a kidney infection, and then gallstones (ultrasound for the gallstones revealed the liver issues).. So I completely understand the shock you’ve felt with the diagnosis AND the further shock of it spreading.
Is she going through any further treatment at the minute?
im new to the group but wanted to let you know someone else is feeling the same way you do x
Thanks for the reply.
Everything is just so hard to take in and accept what’s going on. We are so grateful on the input we have from all the professionals.
I find it hard to take any time for myself and feel that’s taking a bit of a toll on me. However I always just think I have to be there with and for mum.
Take care
Nat x
Hi so sorry to hear if your mums diagnosis too!
It’s such a horrible thing to have to watch your parent go through isn’t it.
Mum was undecided on having chemo, then we had to cancel the appointment with the oncologist as mum was in hospital. I’m not sure now what mum will decide after being told it has spread further.
How is your mum doing? Is she having any treatment. Xx
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
