Hi there,
My dad was diagnosed with a bone marrow cancer at the end of April. I am a nurse and have looked after lots of people with cancer however as you say its completely different when it's your own family. My dad has started treatment and so far is doing well.
I hope you and your dad get on okay tomorrow. Please feel free to message me if you want to chat.
Take care,
Neliss x
Hi neliss
thank you for your reply
we got the results today that is unfortunately Acute Myeloid luekemia :(
which we are terrified about as from what Iv read it’s quite an aggressive form of cancer :(
he has heart disease as had a heart attack a few years ago and has been a very heavy smoker for many years so I’m not hopeful if I’m honest :(
we are absolutely heartbroken
any support welcome right now !
Hey there,
Am so sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis. It's such a difficult time trying to get your head round it all. Is he going to be offered treatment?
My dad has myelodysplasia, unfortunately it's quite advanced however he is having chemo. Initially he wasn't great but thankfully is doing better now.
Due to him shielding I have taken time off work and moved in with my parents. It's been interesting as I haven't lived at home for 20 years!! It's been hard not being able to see my husband and friends and access all the usual routes of support due to the virus. That was the main reason I joined here to get some support and feel a bit less isolated. It's obviously been good being able to be with my parents over the last couple of months.
Take care and keep in touch if you feel like it.

Hi
thank you for your reply , it’s comforting to hear everyone’s experiences good or bad with cancer .
so lovely of you to move into your parents place and brave !
my father had his blood marrow biopsy today and the results will be Wednesday, by which I will imagine things will live very fast after then (treatment wise )
he seems to be putting a brave face on it and is possibly a little in denial (probably a good thing as otherwise he could get overwhelmed and afraid which is the Exact stage i am in !)
can I ask how bad the chemo is on the body ? When I heard the word luekemia a vision of a very frail/bald image popped into my head
but is that a common myth and actually not always the case ?
it’s not the cancer itself that frightens me as much as the toll of the treatments on his body ( if that makes sense )
is there a way to mentally prepare him ? Or best to let him deal with things his own way ?
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
