Hi, my dad was diagnosed with myelodysplasia on the 5th May this year. I am struggling to cope and everything feels worse due to the ongoing pandemic. My dad is shielding and I've moved in with him and my mum. Not being able to access all the normal routes of support is making a difficult situation even harder. I thought I would try here to hopefully make some sense of it all.

  • Hi and welcome to the community though sorry to hear about your dad. Hopefully you will have seen already our main site on MDS, where I see it notes that often this is treatable though cure is rather less common. My wife's cancer is very different but similar in that she has been treated and her cancer is stable and has been that way for 6 years.

As you are providing direct support is may well help you to have a look at Looking after someone with cancer, and remember as well as posting on here as often as you like our phone service is also available for an instant fix.

I did a living with less stress course that really helped me, the trying to live in the here and now and appreciate what we have was very helpful. The breathing exercises were great for relaxation but also for the inevitable problems that life likes to throw our way.

    <<hugs>>

    Hi Steve,

Thanks very much for your lovely reply. Glad your wife continues to be stable.

The course you mention sounds good and definitely something that would be beneficial to me. I have found the Macmillan site really helpful so far and it's good know the support is there.

    Take care and thanks again,

    Hi Belle13,

Hope you’re okay. I’m going through a similar situation with my dad- he was diagnosed middle of April. I agree it’s so hard with the current pandemic however the specialist helping my dad have been amazing, hopefully you’ll have the same experience with the doctors. Hopefully you’ll be able to get more support- take care

    Hi Mollie,

Thank you so much for replying to my post. Sorry to hear about your dad, hope you are all doing OK.

My dad's consultant is lovely and has been very helpful. I am also finding this site really useful too.

    Thanks,
