Hey everyone

I'm after some advice please. My mum has got bowel cancer that has gone into her pancreas and also her liver. There is also a lymph node that showed cancer too. On top of all that she has a big blood clot in her vein leading to her liver that won't respond to thinners. They found out about the cancer through specialist scans and told her the bad news but said they were going to take liver biopsy. We waited over 3 weeks for them to then say they couldn't tell so sent it to another hospital and they've done a couple of tests but now run out of biopsy. They have said she could have another biopsy because if there is a small chance of lymphoma then that could be treated, but when I said so do you think it's lymphoma he said no but we can check. My mum doesn't want another biopsy, I think we all know there is too much going on with her to be able to do anything but my question is IF it was lymphoma and could be treated, then what about all the other stuff? The bowel, pancreas etc. I thought lymphoma was cancer of lymph nodes? So even if she had treatment for that then wouldn't it be pointless with all the other things going on? I asked the consultant what would happen if she didn't have another biopsy and he said that it would be a case of making her more comfortable for end of life.

I'm sorry it's maybe a long confusing post.i feel very confused myself.

Thanks for any advice

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your mum has bowel cancer which has spread to her pancreas and liver and there's a possibility she may have lymphoma as well.

To answer your question about lymphoma, it is a cancer of the lymphatic system and you can read more about it if you click on the link I've created. It also tells you what treatment is available. There are lots of different types of lymphoma and your mum's medical team would need to know which type it is to be able to tailor your mum's treatment.

The best person to ask about possible treatments would be, with your mum's permission, her CNS. If your mum doesn't want you to speak to her CNS then you could post your question in the ask a nurse section of the community and one of the specialist nurses will aim to respond within 2 working days.

When you have a minute it, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
