I'm struggling and need to talk to someone. 2 days ago my husband went to drop some things off at his parents house and his dad suddenly collapsed and my husband ended up having to do CPR on his dad. This saved his life according to paramedics and my father in law was taken to hospital where he was put in an induced coma and they got the results back from a biopsy he had had on good friday and it turns out that he has cancer that has spread from his kidney throughout his body. There is no cure we were told unfortunately and if his heart stopped again then it would be cruel to bring him back. Currently my father in law is sedated in hospital and obviously we cant see him, but I'm struggling to know how to support my husband through this time as he has sobbed on me and hes not usually an emotional man. We keep calling in on my mother in law and checking on her. Thankyou to anyone who has the time to respond.

  • Hi and welcome to the community though so sorry to hear about your father-in-law.

I can only reflect on the experience of losing my father and how much that affected me but that was hardly under the conditions we find ourselves now.

In terms of wanting to talk to someone our helpline is open 0808 808 0000, it can sometimes be easier to have that two way conversation as forum posts are of course somewhat more distant.

When I was low and became emotional after my father died often my wife would just sit beside me and put her hand on my arm, I found that quite soothing.

    <<hugs>>
