Hi. My Wife’s health on Friday took a turn for the worse where the doctors said she has days left. We knew this was coming.

Over the past days she has been relatively unconscious and at one point stopped breathing, can not swallow and talk. She has two syringe drivers in and also administering more meds through subcutaneous injections.

But the past days she has had a surge where she can talk, aware (albeit confused) of the surroundings and making jokes etc.

This is great, but I believe it is called ‘Terminal Lucidity’ and wondering if anyone else has any experience on this. How long does it last for etc.

We have 3 young daughters and they are getting confused thinking Mummy is better. We have reassured them this is normal.

Hi Jason I'm really sorry about your wife it will be such a hard time for all of you just now. In my experience the surge won't last to long normally a day or two most often less than that. Use the time to say everything you want to say and let the girls do the same if you are up to it. You will find your wife will be confused from the medication and will gradually sleep more and be less aware of her surroundings but I believe even when a person is unconscious they still know your there ,hear what you say and take comfort from it. If you need to chat I'm here

  • I had no idea there was such a thing. My husband left hospital a couple of weeks ago with a carrier bag full of injectable drugs for district nurses to have to hand - I guess they are the same ones your wife has. We know he may have some weeks, hopefully months still with us but I don't really know what to expect.

Sending you and your girls virtual hugs (((0))))
