looking for some advice on how I should be handling the news my mum received other days 3 +1/2 years ago we got the devastating news that my mum had secondary cancer in her liver and if she didn't have treatment she would only have Max 3months to live but with treatment it would prolong life by extra 2 months so she took the treatment without knowing her prognosis so we have been attending our local cancer centre for last 3+1/2 years every 6months for check ups went on Tuesday with her for normal check up and Dr announced he was discharging her due to being "cancer free" for 3years when asked how that could be as were told she was terminal he then went onto say the secondary cancer was never confirmed just suspected so were now obviously happy if it's true she cancer free but how can this happen and not be discussed with patient?

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

What fantastic news that your mum is cancer free! I can understand though why you'd all be feeling a bit bemused having thought she had incurable cancer.

No one here is going to be able to tell you why your mum wasn't told that her cancer wasn't incurable sooner, we'd only be guessing. The best person to answer this question would be your mum's CNS. Although she's been discharged, if this was only recently then her nurse should be able to look at her records and answer her questions.

Another avenue for your mum would be to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at her hospital as they can help resolve problems or concerns.

I hope you've all had a little celebration
