Mum was diagnosed 2007 successfully had chemo.Recurrence in 2012 offered chemo and debunking surgery.Oncologist has given her genetic testing a few weeks ago.Having seen Dad died of prostate cancer in 2017 my sister and I are concerned for the results.Has anyone else had genetic or BRCA results.Thank you.Me again.

  • Hi, sorry to hear about both your mum and dad, my wife has not had genertic testing but then her form of cancer is quite different. There can be two sides to genetic testing one is that if the patient has a particular gene then they could be some very tailored treatments that are available and that is generally a very good thing. The other side though is that you and your sister might want to be checked too and if found to carry the gene to be aware that you have a slighly higer risk too. Perhaps this is best summed up on the main site here.

What we often find is knowledge is key to dealing with these issues as not knowing will not change anything and with knowledge people can start to make informed choices.

  • Thank you Steve.Yes Mum has beaten the odds twice however Dads prostate cancer was the rare aggressive small cell type and watching him unable to walk or do anything in the end as it went to his brain was dreadful. At least now we can cope with the information. However I am still a little anxious. The oncologist thinks that because Mum survived twice perhaps her cancer is a hereditary one.I guess we will find out soon.
