Tamoxifen and emotions

Hi there my first post on here. I’ve just finished radiotherapy and am about 2 months into tamoxifen. I’m really struggling with my emotions and am snapping all the time and having mood swings. I really worry about the impact on my daughter as I’m so unpredictable and ratty. It must be horrible and confusing for her but I feel like apologising all the time isn’t enough. Does anyone have any advice about other options for managing mood swings? I miss oestrogen so much….

  • Hi  and I see it’s your first post so a warm welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about the challenges you are dealing with,

I have been on my incurable cancer journey for over 23 years and at the very start we as a family agreed that we all would bad days and would say stuff that we regretted and we could all have pity me parties…. but the rule was that the parties did not continue into the next day….. it was amazing that my wife and two teenagers…… who became mum’s developed a way off understanding and dealing with our bad days.

The cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but you have done the right thing in reaching out to a place where you can ask questions and getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same cancer journey.

As you see Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) and to widen your support base you may want to join and post in our supportive Breast cancer support group. This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

The Macmillan Support Line is open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 where you can talk with someone about specific cancer and practical information, get emotional support or just connect with a listening ear.

We also have our Telephone Buddy Service where you can be matched with someone who understands what you're going through, and they'll give you a weekly call.

Talking to people face to face and one on one support can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help.
