My partner has cancer and I am worried and can't sleep

My partner was recently diagnosed and we found out yesterday he is having surgery at the end of the month.  I am full of anxiety and can only sleep for a few hours at night.  I wake up around 3AM and try to go to sleep.  Last night I got a glass of water  but after drinking it my throat still feels like the Sahara.  I checked our list of prescriptions and the letter from the hospital for the surgery appointment and had hoped I would go to sleep.  I end up laying there with a song stuck in my head that i heard earlier in the day and random images flashing through my mind, but for some reason I can't let go of being awake.  I feel selfish for worrying so much.  I have struggled to cry, too. .I worry about everything.  My sister-in-law offered to be there for me 24 hours, but she is a bit older and even though she said I could, I would feel awful for ringing her at 3AM.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your partners diagnosis.

The cancer diagnosis in the family is such a challenging and stressful time but I do hope you will find the Community a safe place to get support and to ask your questions.

The Community is actually divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so you may want to have a look through THIS LIST where you will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed.

These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis and treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.

When it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting family you may also benefit from joining our general Family and friends and Carers only support groups where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.

The Macmillan Support Line is open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 where you can talk with someone about specific cancer and practical information, get emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just connect with a listening ear.  We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and aim to give support to all the family.

Please do get back to me if you need further help.
