(Hair) Root cover- up

I’m looking for recommendations for my mum, who is currently undergoing FOLFIRI chemotherapy. She’s understandably quite conscious about her grey roots showing, she is naturally brown/black shade but she knows that colouring her hair isn’t recommended while she’s having treatment.

I’ve seen lots of temporary root touch-up products, including sprays, powders and hair mascara-type products, with some claiming to be organic or more natural.

Has anyone here used any of these while undergoing chemotherapy and had a good experience? I’d really appreciate recommendations for something gentle and suitable for a sensitive scalp. ️

Thank you!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I didn't use any touch up hair products while going through chemo, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

If you don't get any replies here, it might be an idea to also post this in the bowel cancer group, which I can see you've joined, as you'll then connect directly with others who are having the same type of chemo as your mum.

Wishing you both all the best.

  • Hi Monica

I can understand Mum feeling that she would like to add some colour to her roots now that they are showing.

I did scalp cooling during my own chemo but still experienced hair shedding. It can really affect how you feel.

I did try the hair fibres and they did help disguise the thinner parts however they can be a bit sticky so would advise using sparingly.

I also used the temporary root touch up sprays- L'Oreal and others- they did make a difference but again it was a case of using sparingly and applying a little to the actual hair and trying to keep away from the scalp- as when they dry they can irritate the skin.

When chemo finished I waited a while before trying hair colours again and had been recommended to try Daniel Field natural hair colour however I found that with the hair I had left- it did not take particularly well as my hair was a mixture of coarse and finer hair. My hair dresser actually recommended I return to my usual Nice and Easy colour and this worked well.

During chemo I focussed more on trying to keep my hair cared for gently and conditioned.

it may be worth asking her CNS whether there is a hairdresser/wig lady connected to her hospital that can give advice. Mine had one that would visit every Wednesday am and there was also a volunteer who would be around a few times a week who could also give hair advice.
