Currently undergoing chemo (Xelox) treatment after op for bowel cancer and really struggling to keep fluids up which is having impact on bowels etc. What do people drink? I've found my sense of taste and smell have gone completely wonky, especially for week after infusion. Struggling with water, tea, coffee etc. I've tried various fruit squashes but can't stand the sweet taste. Can't have anything too cold. Any suggestions, just wondered what others had found.
Hi Wibblecat
You may benefit from putting this post in the bowel group too, as there are lots of discussions there from people who have been dealing with Xelox chemo who might have some ideas for you.
I have in the past struggled to drink enough water myself, but it’s important to do this with any kind of chemotherapy. It is hard when your taste is not the same though! I can’t have sugary drinks as I’m diabetic, so tend to just have a splash of sugar free squash in water just to give it a little taste.
Hopefully others in the bowel group will be able to offer some suggestions for you.

I’m the same although my drugs are different. My taste goes wonky about 2 days after my infusions and comes back pretty much to normal by day 5. I find everything tastes too sweet and drinks are worse than food. but I can tolerate coffee, which I never drank before! And a sliced lemon (I add sliced ginger too if I have any) in a teapot full of hot water works for me. I just re-heat mugs of it in the microwave. Tonic water is also tolerable but tastes different to normal. And very weak lemon or blackcurrant squash. I think bitter tasting things are best for me.
I have to get my husband to taste anything I’m cooking as my instinct is to just check more salt in to get rid of the odd sweet taste!

That's really helpful thanks Sarah. I used to love coffee, went off it, but like you i now find that i can only really enjoy bitter tastes. I'll give tonic water a try, the slightly bitter taste of that will probably work for me.
