Hi, all, I'm a partner to someone whose undergoing chemo after a bowel resection. The op went well, the first round of chemo was going ok, then he was admitted to hospital on Thursday with a high temperature and diahorrea. Because its  a Bank Holiday, he has to be admitted a surgical ward and the agency staff have said they dont  know about chemo and he has to wait for the team to come in on Tuesday. He's having 6+ bouts of sickness and diahorrea every day, lots of green bile and not eating or drinking, even water is burning as he tries to swallow it and his stomach is cramping. His temperature is 37 - 38.  He's on paracetamol drip, and tramadol, and sometimes they give some fluids. I am new to cancer and dont know what I should be asking for to help him get what he needs. Can anyone advise please? Thank you so much - I am frightened at how he has deteriorated since being admitted at the moment, I must admit.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read how ill your partner is since having his first cycle of chemo and it must be a very worrying time for you.

Both me and my husband have had chemo at different times and both of us were given a 24 hour emergency number to ring if we were worried about any side effects after having chemo. Your husband should have been given a number too and this would give him access to the nurses and doctors on the chemo ward, who are available no matter whether it's a bank holiday or an ordinary working day. When my husband had some side effects he rang the emergency chemo number and would have been given a bed on that ward if necessary. Did your husband ring his emergency chemo number?

I hope he starts to feel better soon.
