Cold cap therapy

I had my first chemotherapy session yesterday with cold cap treatment, following a breast cancer diagnosis in January and a mastectomy in March.

Are there any tips for trying to keep my hair during the cold cap therapy, as I feel like everything has been quite vague so far. I have yet to wash out the conditioner as I’ve heard a mixture of keeping it in for 24 - 48 hours. Some say to wash with cold water, others say it doesn’t make a difference.

I’ve recently turned 36 and would like to keep things as “normal” as possible during this whirlwind of a process, as I’m sure everyone else does too!  So if there’s anything in particular that’s worked well for anybody, please send your advice my way! It would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ChickenWine

I hope that your chemo went ok yesterday.

I have put a link above with advice around scalp cooling. It is my own experience so if you have any other questions, please do ask.

  • Hi Jane,

Thank you so much for sharing that - I wish I’d have come across this before my session yesterday as it summed up my experience almost to the tee! I find hearing it from someone who’s been through it is more relatable.

My session yesterday went as well as possible thanks, it’s just waiting to see what side effects will appear and when now. Next session booked for the 3rd of June! X

  • I’ve found the Paxman website to be really useful for what to expect/do. I wash my hair twice a week. Once on the evening of chemo to get the conditioner out (and I use cold water that day) and then again 3 or 4 days later depending on if I’m going out or not. I use warm but not hot water that day. I’m 2/3 of the way through my treatment and have kept maybe 70% of my hair. It’s very thin on the crown but not noticeable if I wear a hat (berets are my favourite). You’ve got this. x

I’ve not come across that website before, but I’ll definitely be checking it out now - thank you for the recommendation!
It’s difficult to find a balance of when to wash my hair currently as it’s only the first cycle and I’m still unsure of what to expect with my side effects and when - currently nothing to report! Not actively planned any trips out just incase, but I’m sure I’ll venture out over the weekend now. Managing the hot weather may be tricky!
Ah that’s really positive, I’m glad the cold cap therapy has been kind to you. X

    Link above is for website.

I used to wash mine twice a week. In between used a little dry shampoo. As chemo can dry out your hair it never looked greasy. The day of chemo I just used to rinse out the conditioner when I got home with lukewarm running water from the shower.
